Jenny EriksonHere’s the thing about humans: We’re not necessarily good people. In fact some pretty evil Homo sapiens have walked the planet over the years. Did anyone see The Last King of Scotland? That Idi Amin guy was not exactly good for the Ugandans. Other super bad dudes have included Josef Stalin, Adolf Hitler, and Attila the Hun.
Because I’m an equal opportunist, I feel compelled to also add Jezebel, Countess Elizabeth Bathory, and Andrea Yates to the list. It’s apparent that evil comes packaged in either gender.
There’s been an evil dude in power in Libya for more than 41 years. Muammar Gaddafi has been the totalitarian ruler of the middle-eastern state since a military overthrow in 1969. Life is not kind to the average citizen under Gaddafi’s rule (it never usually is when one lives under a dictatorship), and recently Libyans have protested the oppressive government regime.
Gaddafi’s response was to call the protesters “cockroaches” and claim they were “serving the devil.” Oh, and he had his minions kill anyone they found opposing him. After the funeral service for those massacred by Gaddafi, the tyrant ordered his peeps to use artillery, swords, or even hammers to attack the mourners. In other words: Crush any and all dissent.
Not cool, evil dictator dude, not cool.
The United Nations warned Gaddafi to stop the attacks on the civilians, or else military action would be taken. Like the predictable oppressor he is, Gaddafi did not stop killing his people. So last Saturday we joined in with our European allies and Arab partners and bombed some strategic military sites in an operation dubbed Odyssey Dawn.
On Monday, President Obama sent a letter to Congress explaining his actions. It pretty much sums up the above, but with more legalese and no Last King of Scotland references. He concludes:
For these purposes, I have directed these actions, which are in the national security and foreign policy interests of the United States, pursuant to my constitutional authority to conduct U.S. foreign relations and as Commander in Chief and Chief Executive.
I am providing this report as part of my efforts to keep the Congress fully informed, consistent with the War Powers Resolution. I appreciate the support of the Congress in this action.
It sounds amazingly similar to what President Bush said exactly eight years ago as he authorized strikes on Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. An evil dictator exploits and massacres civilians, and force is needed to remove the threat and restore control of the country to its people.

You know, there are only so many ways that you can sell this to your people- of course it is going to sound the same. That is a petty move to try and make Obama look bad...
I believe that Obama SHOULD have went through Congress, as the US wasn't in any immediate trouble. But he stalled in making the decision to join the UN. This is not a US war- this is a UN air strike. The US is just participating.
IF all plans are followed, we won't be staying. If that happens- then I feel as if we are doing the right thing here. Helping out a country that needs it. However, it isn't our place to rebuild or reorganize their government... that is for them to figure out. If we get in too far, then we'll have problems.
we wont go to war with them ...we are in a UNn action right now but i believe thats as far as it will go
mommix4 - military wife over here, far from all of our troops are overseas. of course, i'd rather have them back here at home, but we have A LOT of military still on US soil. and then we have the reserves. and then we have countless young men and women who would jump in and join if the need arised.
to answer your question - no. i don't think we will go to war with libya. like a pp said - this was a UN air strike, not the US directly taking on libya.
I don't think we should be there, but what I really love is how major networks are glossing over Obama's unilateral decision to involve the US Military --- something he spoke directly about when he was a Senator:
The exact quote from then-Senator Obama in 2007:
The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.
As Commander-in-Chief, the President does have a duty to protect and defend the United States. In instances of self-defense, the President would be within his constitutional authority to act before advising Congress or seeking its consent. History has shown us time and again, however, that military action is most successful when it is authorized and supported by the Legislative branch.
Anon- perhaps you should read the news... because 9 anti-war protests have ALREADY been established in major areas and plan to increase until Obama stops participating. Democrats and Republicans are calling foul... and this is not a threat to the US (which is why Congress SHOULD have been addressed) but a UN issue. The US is an active member of the UN- we promise to aid those that are being murdered for no reason. That is part of being a UN member.
In terms of the meddling Obama has done recently in the Middle East- this is the only true justified act. He should have had no part of Egypt or any of the other rebellions currently going on... our only concern is the innocent people being killed by a very bad man.
