Endless Continuing Resolutions or Government Shutdown?

We’re almost half way through the fiscal year (which began on October 1, 2010), and the federal government still hasn’t figured out its budget. They keep passing continuing resolutions, which means that they agree to stick mostly with last year’s budget until a final budget can be passed.

The most recent extension passed 87-13 in the Senate on Thursday, with our politicians assuring us that this will be the last time. The resolution included $6 billion in cuts for the fiscal year, yet nine Republican senators voted against it.

The conservative naysayers say that the cuts aren’t deep enough for their conscience to allow them to vote in favor of the short-term budget stopgap. Florida Senator Marco Rubio released a press statement explaining his vote in opposition of the resolution:

Today’s vote, first of all, should remind us of how we got here. Why are we funding government in two or three week increments? And it’s because Democrats, when they ran the House, the Senate and the White House, didn’t pass a budget.

“But more importantly, this is a terrible way to run government. We are facing some serious issues in America today, particularly the fact that we are borrowing $4 billion a day to keep the lights on and particularly the fact that we owe $14 trillion and growing. It’s time to face those issues in a serious way. The time for waiting is over. The time for games has passed.

He’s right. The spending in our country is completely out of control. The question shouldn’t be what we should fund, it needs be what can we afford? Unfortunately, the Democrats still control the upper house (the Senate) and the White House, and they don’t seem to mind sending the bill for fraudulent spending to our kids and grandkids.

$6 billion is a drop in the bucket of what we need to cut, but at least it’s a drop. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and Republicans need to take it to avoid falling into the trap of being the bad guys shutting down the government. Fiscally sane people have a better chance of getting elected in 2012 if the conservatives in congress take the small steps they can while reminding Americans that they’d like to sprint to the finish line if only the liberal majority weren’t stopping them.

Uh, yeah. You're out of your mind if you really think people are going to vote republican again after the little stunts they're pulling as far as reproductive health goes.

Uh, yeah, because the only issue that matters to anyone is reproductive health.  That's WAY more important than national debt....certainly people are really more preoccupied with abortion rights than any other issue.  That kind of thinking is is how we end up with administrations that are completely inept, incapable and destructive.

I totally agree with your post, Jenny - if we have to take baby steps, then we take baby steps - as long as those steps are going in the right direction.  Right now we're doing a whole lot of standing still and going backwards at the same tim.

We need to save money AND make sure everyone has the same rights AND that no one is thrown under the bus. How the hell we do that I don't know. Someone needs to figure it out and SOON.

america open your eyes and ears and think.  why are we in this budget mess, because of the money we gave to the too big too fails (they should have failed) and the loser wars.  we gave the banks that money without a thread attached, and no one went to jail, and they are doing the same or worse-- and the wars, iraq was a total lie, bush, cheney, etc....commitied  war crimes

now we are dealing w/  supreme court monkies ,the law that allows corporations to give as much as they want to campaigns, this meanswe are being governed by corporations, or people like the koch brothers!   does that mean anything to anyone!

the governement is broken,  a governemnt under republicans would be the death of this country.  the constitution would be changed from for by and of the people (it is almost there) to a government for by and of the corporations, the millionaire senators , and all other billionaire republicans who want to screw the average citizen & the poor

STOP WATCHING FOX TV, GLENN BECK, RUSH, SARAH--  THEY ARE DOING WHAT THEY DO TO MAKE MONEY, THEY ARE SO GREEDY THEY DO NOT CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO THE COUNTRY.

OBAMA HAD ALOT OF GREAT IDEAS, WHY DID HE TURN INTO A WHIMP?   I PRAY HE WAKES UP AND BECOMES THE PERSON HE SAID HE WAS, HE MIGHT BE OUR ONLY CHANCE, I HAVE YET TO SEE ANYONE STANDING IN THE WINGS WHO WHO WOULD BE FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

We are concerned with the wrong things, time is a factor. America is too proud to beg God for mercy, and God resists the proud. Watch!

The problem is, we have separated the Bible, the old and new testament is one book. God is separating us, the wheat are in the barn, the tares are in the churches waiting on a thief in the night. Following the world, is great misery.* Rev. 10:8 Christ died in Egypt not Jerusalem as the Jews swear by, Rev 2:9. Watch from the Bible. The priests and Jews watch money and the world. Who do Jews pray to? Be honest it is not Christ. It's Mary and the pope, where's Joseph?* Genesis 47:29, 49:22-23.

The Tea Party element always has something to disagree with. The only thing the Tea Party wants is chaos and confusion. They are against unity and NPR badmouthing the Tea Party secretly on makes them stronger. If the non Tea Party Republicans can quash and disagreement from the Tea Party reps, then there might be hope. I just don't think they want to. All they're interested in uniting against Obama, outing the black skinned president, and making the Democrats the scapegoats. Then in another 8 years after a new Republican is elected, the Democrats will go through the same process. Repeat and recycle.
