Michelle Obama Fights the Childhood Obesity Epidemic

First Lady Michelle Obama has a problem with fat kids. More specifically, she doesn’t like childhood obesity. Last year she launched the Let’s Move campaign, with the goal of ending childhood obesity in a generation. After all, it is a national security risk (insert eye roll here).

Lady Michelle promoted legislation to overhaul school lunches, which her husband signed into law at the risk of sleeping on the couch. She’s constantly on my TV when my kids are watching their shows, encouraging young viewers to get active. She even slips into her $495 Tory Burch boots to do some organic gardening at the White House.

Most recently, Mrs. Obama has been talking with the National Restaurant Association about providing smaller portions and healthier options on the kids' menu. She must know better than restaurateurs how to run their businesses.

Noting that research has shown that children consume more saturated fat and less fiber and calcium when they eat out, Obama has challenged restaurant owners to change their menus, recipes, and marketing practices to "give parents the confidence to know that they can go into any restaurant in this country and choose a genuinely healthy meal for their kids."

Thank goodness for the First Lady, without whom I might not have known that feeding my kids cheeseburgers and sugared sodas on a regular basis could lead to unnecessary weight gain. I was just flailing my arms in despair over being forced to take my family to Pizza Hut every night to order them three ‘meat lovers’ slices each.

This is incredibly insulting to parents. Newsflash to the government: Changing menus is not going to slenderize America. People who eat 5,000 calories a day and feed their kids three scoops of ice cream nightly are going to keep doing that. People who lead active and healthy lifestyles will continue to seek out nutritious restaurant options -- or cook at home with ingredients from the farmers' market.

The idea that restaurant menus are behind the obesity epidemic is like saying spoons make people fat or selling gun parts on eBay kills people. Michelle Obama could better spend her time campaigning to get the water turned back on in California, so farmers could get back to work growing all of that healthy food she’s so keen on feeding us.

Some days, you write good articles... then you lower your standards and just turn mean. What is the difference between Laura Bush trying to get kids to read more? Nothing... as the first lady, they get to choose where they focus their attention. Quite often, if you look to the past, our nathion's youth is one of the top priorities.

I'm no Obama fan... but this is her thing and I think she has every right to work it the best she can. It isn't like it hurts anyone- being active and making healthy food choices IS a benefit to our youth and our society, just like reading more and childhood literacy.

That, and I'd rather her not involve herself in stuff she doens't know about... her husband meddles enough as it is. ;-)

Regarding the $495 boot dig, I'm confused. Your articles always seem to vehemently support rich people being able to spend their money however they wish. Is that only rich Republicans?

History, the difference is, is that Laura Bush, didnt push or make the president sign legislation on how we should read. Michelle has had her husband sign legislation on how we should eat and now is "suggesting" how restaurants should run their business and cook their food. I just want to know what happened to personal responsiblity?? I am on weight watchers, because I like to eat, and when going through chemo, my fat ass liked to fry up a steak and melt butter and blue cheese on top of it. So now that I am done with chemo, I have to lose this weight. It is my fault and my responsibility. Not the job of President Obama and FIrst Lady Michelle to tell me how to lose it. And when Michelle is a size negative 4, then she can say something. She is not exactly skinny. And another difference too, is that Laura Bush, practiced what she preached. Michelle Obama doesnt. Its always do as I say, not as I do, with the Obamas.

It's amazing how political conservatives have made EVERYTHING.  Hating somthing for no other reason than it has an Obama name attached to it.

This is no different than Nancy Regan's Just Say No Campaign.

There is a major obesity problem in this country, parents are at fault (and if they knew how to feed their kids they wouldn't be so fat) , schools are at fault and restaraunts are at fault.

No one is banning you from eating french fries or feeding them to your kids, but if they can get healthy items added to kids menus and healthier food in school cafeterias then that is fantastic.

There is an even BIGGER problem with Michelle, the food Nazi. First, she is 35lbs overweight herself and has gained 15 of that in the past 2 years...and have you seen what is on the White House Menus? Bratwurst, $500.00 a pound steak (the kind that has so much saturated fats that the steak "melts" in your mouth!), ice cream, heavy creamed vegetables, Pizza, etc. Every time you see the Obama's on an outing (which is quite often!) they are sticking fat/sweet foods in their mouths! And why hasn't anyone pointed out that not only does her hubby OFTEN eat Cheeseburgers for lunch, but they are always medium rare--people you DON'T eat medium rare hamburger meat. It's like walking the middle line on a highway--sooner or later you are going to get smacked. Oh, and remember her "garden" that she was feeding visitors? TOXIC!! Polluted--by Bill Clinton who had raw sewage dumped in that area thinking it would "fertilize" the grounds...what idiots liberals are. And I am tired of clueless people like these trying to run our lives.

All that I took from this article is that Michelle Obama is doing more work on this campaign than I realized and that you are a bitch.  Is that what you were going for?  If not, then perhaps your criticism of Mrs. Obama could have been juxtaposed with your superior ideas for how to combat childhood obesity.  Perhaps you could have taken a moment to intelligently explain how this issue is NOT a concern for America as a whole.  Or perhaps you could have just been less of a bitch.  Regardless, you have made no contribution to the world today.

Obesity is an epidemic health problem in our country. What is so wrong with her trying to encourage our younger generation being healthy? I don't think she meant to "insult parents" by asking restaurants to examine their menu choices. Have you seen the movie super size me? Kids are the primary target of advertisement of McDonald's, more children could recognize ronald over george washington. People often eat fast food out of convenience, so it would be nice if more fast food chains had healthier choices and more prominent nutritional information on the things they serve, if something is right infront of your face of course you're going to pay more attention to it! Yes, it is the parents' responsibility to make sure their child is eating properly, but any help is good at the point our country is at with this. No one's trying to take away your right to eat or feed your child a damn cheeseburger. Find something actually worthwhile to bitch about instead of someone trying to help our kids be healthy. Sheesh.

i'm very satisfied that she is taking it upon herself to "help" with childhood obesity. i love how people say she "made him sign a law" because i can't even get my husband to pick up his dirty clothes off the bathroom floor so she must know what she is doing there. no worries to you though if you choose to feed your kid crap bc you can still pack his lunch with all kinds of chips, soda, and hostess cakes you want. let's hope your kid NEVER gets obese bc you might be needing a first-lady that cares as much about children's health as she does.

The whole "healthy" food thing irks me.  My son NEEDS high fat foods because he is severely underweight(due to an unknown medical condition we have been searching for an answer since he got sick about 1 1/2yrs ago)  So the "healthyer" they make menus and the more "low-fat" foods are put on store shelfs and the "regular" food is pulled the less food my son has to eat.  The harder it is to go out to eat with him.  He already can't eat soy or milk because of allergies, so it's not like I can add butter or milk to make something "more fattening".

I agree with you completely!  The first lady should be more concerned with other things rather than weight.

Wow!! Thoughtful commentary & arguments on The Stir, good work people! (well, except for Tiff; a clue, Tiff: the phrase,'you're a bitch, you bitch' doesn't advance your agenda as much as you might think it does).
