Warning: The following content contains graphic language about dead babies. It will probably make you cry. Or throw up. Or both.
An abortionist in West Philadelphia has been arrested and charged with eight counts of murder -- seven of them being babies born alive after a botched, illegal late-term abortion, and one being a woman who died of an overdose of anesthesia.
Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 69, made millions of dollars over 30 years, performing as many illegal, late-term abortions as he could, prosecutors said. State regulators ignored complaints about him and failed to visit or inspect his clinic since 1993, but no charges were warranted against them, District Attorney Seth Williams said.
Gosnell "induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord," Williams said.
Williams said patients were subjected to squalid and barbaric conditions at Gosnell's Women's Medical Society.
Gosnell is only being charged with seven counts of infanticide because those seven fetuses had the audacity to slip completely from their mother’s body before the doctor could scramble their brains with scissors and kill them. A baby is considered ‘unborn’ if its head still remains within the birth canal, so the thousands of children dead by Gosnell’s hands can’t be counted as murders.
My heart hurts. This vile excuse of a human witnessed one of life’s great wonders, the birth of a human, and in the same breath he violently snuffed that life out. His true crime is the exploitation of God knows how many women, who will now be scarred forever, both physically and emotionally.
How desperately alone and scared does a woman have to be to put herself through that? People that believe that a legal right to an abortion helps women are misinformed. These women were not ‘saved’ or ‘helped’ by abortion. They were terrified and pressured and lied to about the development of their baby, their adoption options, or their ability to raise an unplanned child.
A legal right to an abortion does not mean the abolition of back-alley clinics. State regulators ignored complaints for almost 20 years before going to investigate some drug-related charges last year. They walked into a ‘house of horrors.’
Authorities went to investigate drug-related complaints at the clinic last year and stumbled on what Williams called a "house of horrors."
"There were bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses were scattered throughout the building," Williams said. "There were jars, lining shelves, with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose."
This did not happen as a result of President Bush outlawing late-term abortions. The complaints began in 1993, a full decade before that law came into effect. This is most likely not the only ‘clinic’ of its kind. These ‘doctors’ take advantage of women so frightened that they’d let a high school student administer anesthesia to them. They don’t care about the women. They care about the cash in their pockets.
How many other places like this exist in the United States? How many doctors lie to moms about the life inside of them? How many women are irrevocably harmed because they are lied to by a society that tells them abortion is the answer?
Advocating for the pro-choice movement isn’t the way to help women, because abortion isn’t the way to help women. Even when women chose to have one, they don’t want to … they just can’t see any other options. True compassion isn’t campaigning to ‘elect pro-choice Democratic women to office,’ it’s calling your local pregnancy care center and asking what you can do to help. Truly supporting women is helping out with their kids, bringing a young single mom a meal, donating your kids’ old clothes to a charity that helps poor families, or raising money for organizations that provide prenatal care for pregnant moms that can’t afford it.
There are countless ways to help women that have gotten themselves into a pickle. Abortion isn’t one of them. It does more harm than good. For those that are appalled by late-term abortions but not first trimester ones, I have only one question: Where is the line?
