Arizona Shooting: Rep. Gabrielle Giffords & Others Dead

Arizona Shooting

Update: Initial reports that Giffords was dead have been retracted, and it's now believed she's alive and in surgery.

In horrifying news out of Arizona, U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and at least 11 other people were shot this morning at a grocery store in Tucson. The shooting took place during a constituent meeting Gifford was hosting called "Congress on your corner." NPR reports that Giffords and six others have died.

Witnesses say Giffords was speaking to a couple, when the shooter ran up and just started firing. As reports are still coming in, there's no word on the identity of the shooter other than he's a male in his late teens or 20s, or what his motivation might be. But considering it was a political event, one can't help but think that they might be involved.  Her office was vandalized in 2010 after her vote on health care.

While nothing will make the violent act better, if it turns out to be politically motivated it will be a disturbing example of just how ugly politics can get and how desperate things have become in this country. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.
