Elizabeth Edwards 'Goodbye Message' Breaks Our Hearts

Sasha Brown-Worsham

The latest news about Elizabeth Edwards -- estranged wife of once Presidential hopeful John Edwards -- is that she seems to have said "goodbye" to her friends and family on her personal Facebook page.

Elizabeth was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 shortly before the election in which her husband was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee. They announced her illness soon after they lost.

Three years later, in March of 2007, just when John Edwards was starting his own presidential campaign, she told the public that the cancer had returned and spread to her bones and was terminal. Last week it was revealed that the cancer had spread to her liver and now the doctors have advised no further treatment.

Elizabeth is now with her family, including John and her three children, Catharine, 28, Jack, 10, and Emma Claire, 12, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, according to CBS News. Her fourth child, Wade, was killed in an accident when he was a teenager.

What a truly heartbreaking story.

Edwards, a lawyer, has shown incredible strength throughout her life -- getting through the death of her son Wade and choosing to have two babies afterward at the age of 48 and then 50. Later, after her husband's affair and love child were revealed, she showed that even in her 60s, sick with terminal cancer, she could and would stand up for herself and her family when she left her husband and wrote a book about her experiences she called Resilience.

Resilience, indeed.

Her letter to her 442 Facebook friends also shows just how much resilience she truly has:

You all know that I have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces -- my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope. These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined.

... There are certainly times when we aren't able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It's called being human. But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. It isn't possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day. To you I simply say: you know.

She is an amazing woman and I'm not the only one who thinks that. Twitter is ablaze with the news.

From singer Mandy Moore:

thinking of elizabeth edwards and her family. what an inspiring woman.

A tweet from seattledreamer:

feel really bad for Elizabeth Edwards. But really inspired by her as well. I wonder what John is doing right now. Are they still together?

And from allysonaustin:

Thinking about Elizabeth Edwards and her children. I wish the past few years could have been different for them.

We are all thinking of Edwards and her family and hope that despite the past few years, they are able to pull together and truly be together when they all need each other so much.

She is an incredible woman.
