In the recent election, for the first time in decades, more women voters cast their ballots for Republicans than Democrats, hoping the GOP would make things better for their budgets and wallets.
So how did the GOP thank all those women for switching sides? By refusing to allow the Paycheck Fairness bill to come up for a vote in the Senate.
Nice way to say, "Thanks for your votes, ladies, but we still think you're worth less than men."
Wooing women voters with promises of looking out for their best interests and then refusing to allow even a fair debate on a bill that would help countless families in this stinky economy was the legislative equivalent of that guy in high school who promised if you put out, he'd take you to the prom. And then he took the head cheerleader like he was always planning, having played you for the fool.
I wish I could lay all the blame at the feet of the GOP for abandoning women's interests, but, sadly, there is plenty to heap on the Democrats and the White House, as well. I've saved my special anger for two Republican women, though -- Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.
Snowe and Collins broke ranks with the GOP when they voted in favor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, which was the first bill Barack Obama signed into law when he became President. But that only expanded workers' rights to sue for back pay if they've been discriminated against and they find out about it. The courage Snowe and Collins displayed then by standing up for women didn't last long as they stepped back into line with all the other Republicans, essentially saying to American women that there's no need for getting equal pay in the first place, as long as you can sue for it later.
Don't believe it when you hear the conservative spin that's coming -- why, there's no pay disparity in America! That's all a big myth! Just a liberal fairy tale to make more you feel sorry for people who don't work as hard as others!
Tell that to the women who make 77 cents for every dollar a man earns in the exact same job. Or the women of color who make 62 cents. Or the Latina mom who's really at the bottom of the pay ladder with 53 cents.
This isn't about the choices women make about jobs or careers. This is about elected officials playing political games first and putting people last when it comes to ensuring those extra few cents families desperately need to feed their kids or take them to the pediatrician when they're sick.
The right-wing is going to be busy trying to convince us that it's better for struggling Americans to keep those Bush tax cuts for the uber-rich rather than ensuring that women across the country get the equal pay they deserve. That's just a ploy designed to protect their political donors' tax breaks, not one that gets us out of this recession. I just hope the women who switched their votes in the November mid-terms will see that the GOP never had their best interests at heart and come back to the Democrats in 2012.

I'm sorry ... that is the silliest thing I have ever heard that businesses can't afford to compensate women fairly based on women's "needs" and men's "needs." Guess we may as well go back to living in the stone age?
Can you explain how this article...
comes into play, if at all, with how female salaries are calculated. Should it, or shouldn't it? a female at work is absent 15 days one quarter due to family obligations, but otherwise has the exact same merit review as a male counterpart, should both be entitled to the same raise/wage?

I'm just asking, I haven't made up my mind on this one yet. Jenny's points are provoking, as are yours, as are a million people's across the world.
Also, I believe it was Olyvia Snowe that said the legislation was simply redundant... that it accomplishes nothing that already isn't on the books.
Which part of the bill do you think is much different than what we already have, and why do you think that would change things?

It couldn't be more clear, after listening to the man who is against the Act, that he wants employers to be able to continue to profit from 1) discriminating against women when it comes to pay and 2) not being subject to the threat of anti-discrimination laws to act equitably when it comes to how they pay women. He prioirtizes business profitability above human rights, pure and simple.

Then you are obviously not a business owner. This has nothing to do with living in the stone age- you're being overly dramatic. Things are not as black and white as you want to see them- welcome to reality.
This just in from the front lines: not doable.
The economy stinks and the country is argueable teetering on the edge of a depression.
Small businesses are expressing that we cannot be as responsive to every possible social "ideal" coming down the pike, perhaps near as well as large companies can/could, because we are "small"
We are special.
We need to be treated with care or millions of jobs will disaapear.
This isn't Europe.
You can't have 3 months maternity leave if you only make 9 dollars an hour.
You aren't specialized enough and have little to negotiate with.
Many small businesses would have to shut down when dealing with such issues constantly.
A few years ago, I worked at a sandwich shop. It was a crew of all women, until the owner hired a teen guy he met there at the shop because he thought he was so cool. He hired him in at $2 an hour more to do the same job, same tasks, same responsibilities. Why? Because he was the only guy in a crew of women, and he might need more money to take out his girlfriends! How sweet & precious is that, giving hazard pay to some d-bag because he is exposed to so much estrogen?!?!
First of all fearing lawsuits doesn't necassarily have anything to do with legitimate claim. In a country where someone can win after frivolous lawsuits such as spilling coffee on themselves, it's not hard to figure out why companies might fear lawsuits.
That being said I'm sure some people don't get paid what they deserve. Yes some of it has to do with guys giving guys more money. The truth of it is you tend to think people that are like you are worth more. A male CEO is probably going to give a male more money because he reminds him of himself (and he probably likes himself) Just like Obama got more black votes than a normal Dem does, and Hilary had way more women support than a normal dem did. You see it with kids, girls like to play with girls, boys like to play with boys. It's life, and no it's not FAIR, but my mother always told me lifes not fair.
I think Jen has some fair points when it comes to being out of the office more than men, due to pregnancy and children. I know I have to take six weeks off to have my child in Feb, and my boss has said if you can take two weeks off in a row we dont' really need you. He says that to everyone, and yet I'm taking six weeks off. Guess what, I don't want it to affect my raise in the following year, but I wouldnt' be surprised if it does, and I can understand why it would. And like Jen I'm not likily to argue if I don't get the raise I think I deserve, I'm just not the type to confront people.
"Women NEED more family time, women NEED more sick days and late days and even vacation time."
Loving your sources and statistics, but IF this is true, WHY do you think that is? What do you have that proves women "need" more vacation time? Perhaps if there wasn't a pay gap, MEN would be taking more family time.
