Only a few hours before the 2010 election results begin pouring in, most of the country has its eye on the most contentious initiative on the California ballot: Prop 19.
This Proposition would legalize certain marijuana activities including allowing adults 21 and over to possess up to an ounce of pot; consume it in nonpublic places (as long as no children were present); and grow it in small private plots.
The initiative is attention-grabbing for obvious reasons: Marijuana legalization would be an unprecedented experiment. But there's another factor that makes this debate in California so very gripping: It's the fact that the two sides are so split on the issue.
Most polls leading up to the election suggested that the majority of Californians were opposed to legalization. And the major newspapers, both political parties, the two candidates for governor, and most politicians were against the measure, too.
But there are some very vocal supporters of Prop 19 -- many of them celebrities -- who even at this late hour lead us to believe that the issue isn't yet dead in the water.
Celebrities who have come out in favor of the proposition include:
-Danny Glover, Melissa Etheridge, and Hal Sparks held a news conference to drum up support for the initiative.
-Zach Galifianakis took a very visual stand on the issue on Real Time With Bill Maher.
-Sting wrote an impassioned piece on HuffPo arguing that Prop 19 was a necessary step in the country's War on Drugs.
-Willie Nelson endorsed the proposition in High Times.
-Danny DeVito posted the following on Twitter.

-Gmail creator Paul Buchheit donated $100,000 to the campaign.
-And, Snoop Dogg even filmed a special message encouraging people to support Prop 19. (Shocking, I know.)
So will Prop 19 pass? We'll just have to wait and see.
