New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino is one of those people the rest of us hate: He loves to forward emails to everyone in his address book. Unfortunately for Paladino supporters and his myriad addressees, he prefers to send sexually degrading and racist emails.
Oh, and he's a Tea Party candidate who rails against marriage equality, likening Andrew Cuomo's participation in the gay pride parade to "pandering to the pornographers and the perverts, who seek to target our children and destroy their lives."
Let me get this straight. Paladino thinks homosexuality is akin to pornography and perversion, but he thinks it's cool to email his closest friends and family a video featuring bestiality. Tell me again, Carl. Who's pandering to the pornographers and the perverts?
According to the Huffington Post, "These emails run the gamut from your standard email chain smut to greatly disturbing racist imagery. Many of the latter type of emails targeted President Obama and his wife Michelle." Paladino's spokesman Michael Caputo told the AP that these emails "aren't new or relevant," but he never denied that Paladino sent them.
Who cares if they're new? What does that mean, anyway -- that the content has already made the rounds among the homophobic, misogynistic bigot set? As for relevance, I expect most voters would like to know if their candidate is a homophobic, misogynistic bigot. Maybe that will convince some Republicans that Paladino is their man, and maybe it will persuade others to reconsider the evolving image of their party.
If nothing else, perhaps Paladino's example will give others pause before they forward that next potentially offensive email and clog their friends' and families' inboxes.
