Hurricane Earl has people debating the worst places to live during hurricane season, but a little rain has nothing on year-round intolerance.
At least the hurricane is nature.
These states are creating a dangerous atmosphere that's 100 percent man-made, and it's stifling its citizens worse than the stale air of the basement 17 hours into hiding from the hurricanes.
Where does your state rank?
Ohio
Why It's Bad: The Buckeye State has decided to re-draw the map of the United States. Puerto Ricans are currently persona non grata as Ohio has announced a refusal to accept their birth certificates as proof of citizenship in the United States.
California
Why It's Bad: Gays finally get the right to marry! Then the cranky heterosexuals take it away because if they can't be happy, why should anyone be? Prop 8 was knocked down in court, but should it have taken a judge to affirm the "pursuit of happiness"?
The Golden State also boasts the highest percentage of hate crimes in the nation, according to the FBI. Go Warriors!
Texas
Why It's Bad: Let's take a gander at those schoolbooks. Joseph McCarthy = good. Thomas Jefferson advocating separation of church and state = bad.
Arizona
Why It's Bad: Have you heard a little story about the brown people being treated like second-class citizens because they might, possibly, maybe, sort of be illegal? Even if they're here with a valid stamp of approval from the good old US of A?
Georgia
Why It's Bad: A hate crimes law tossed in 2004 by a state court has still not been replaced. Which leaves citizens completely unprotected.
Virginia
Why It's Bad: When Gov. Bob McDonnell came into office this year, he started rolling back protections for its citizens right and left. One of the first things to go? Anti-discrimination rules regarding gay and lesbian state workers.
Oklahoma and Nebraska
Why They're Bad: Allowing religion to sneak into the abortion law throws the separation of church and state out the window.
How is your state looking these days?

"Ohio is willing to work with people born in Puerto Rico to see if they have other forms of documentation, such as a passport or school records, that can verify their identity, Komlanc said." Ohio can have a bad wrap for lots of things, but this time just makes sense to me!
i agree with sarah this was a very liberal biased article.
Wanna know something ironic, Jeanne?
Texas is listed up there. Fine.
But according to Author Richard Florida and demographer Gary Gates, who've compiled information for a Daily Beast article that listed the top 20 "gayest" cities, Austin ranks as number SEVEN. Dallas came in at number 19.
As a musician and resident of Austin, joining many grassroots and non-profit organizations (including The Atticus Circle, which was founded in Austin, no less) suffice it to say that this Tejas girl knows A LOT of people in the LGBT communities of Texas.
And places like Austin, Dallas an Houston . . . even small, western desert towns like Marfa, TX all welcome the LGBT community with open arms.
You should come visit Austin. Actually, come next Saturday, the 11th! You can come with me to attend the Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival!

Ok, maybe I'm liberal, but some of those were messed up. It's ok to take away rights from state workers? Ok to let hate crimes happen? HU?????
So, its liberal to want to protect the rights of all people in this country? Well, then I'm liberal. Because hate crimes are never ok, all people should have the right to marry whom they want, and religion has nothing to do with whether or not I have the right to decide what happens with my own body!!!!!!
Wow. Just wow, girls.
*laughs* Sorry, but sometimes The Touth isn't grand! KIDS Count focuses on the places that are best or worst to raise children, and the majority of the south is high on the list of the worst places to be.
Besides, who cares if it's liberally-slanted? IF she'd been a conservative, would people be whining about that too? People are generally one or the other. If you'd like a different take on it, write your own!
Anyway, I'm with Jeanne. I like my church and state (or state-funded schools) entirely separate, and I like my marriage to be about love between two consenting adults.
The SOUTH. South. Dang it.
I agree that weather it's liberal or not, a lot of these are problematic and have an effect on my opinion of the state. Everyone should be protected against hate crimes, everyone should be able to get married and weather you're pro-life or pro-choice the law shouldn't be made based on religion. And I want to be the one to decide what my children learn as far as religion goes, unless I send them to a religious school they shouldn't learn about God from their teachers.
@Sarah, did you note the pieces about HATE CRIMES? You'd be proud to live in a place where people are beaten, raped and killed for happening to be a certain color, religion, gender or creed? Heck, you're a woman -- you think it's OK if a guy comes up and beats you just because he hates women? That's what a hate crime is.
