Phillip MarkoffPhilip Markoff died this morning in a Boston jail cell. It's believed the 23-year-old, who become known as the "Craigslist Killer", committed suicide.

"Markoff was alone in his cell and all evidence collected thus far indicates that he took his own life," said a statement from officials. "Nonetheless, as with all such cases, a comprehensive investigation will be conducted to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding his death."

By all appearances Markoff, a second-year medical student, was an all-American boy until he was charged with the brutal shooting death and attempted robbery of Julissa Brisman, 25, in April 2009.

Brisman was a masseuse who Markoff met through Craigslist. He was also charged with two other robberies, at least one of which involved a victim he met through Craigslist.

Markoff was engaged to be married to Megan McAllister, who has defended his innocence. Saturday would have been their first wedding anniversary had he not been charged.

Sources told ABC Markoff has attempted suicide twice before since being incarcerated. This time he reportedly cut his wrists and "tied something tightly around his neck before he went to sleep Saturday night."

"He clearly knew what he was doing. He used his medical expertise," the source said.

No words, just sadness -- for the victims and their families, for his former fiance and hers and for Markoff's family as well. To have the life of a child you gave birth to end this way -- in such grave tragedy -- is unimaginable.
