We are all feeling the crunch of a down economy. Even those of us that remain employed are getting pay cuts, or not getting raises to keep up with the ever-rising cost of living. Christmas bonuses? What are those again?
It seems that everyone is exchanging the steak for hamburger, dropping the cable, or camping instead of cruising.
It's what we do as Americans. We pull up our big kid pants, put our noses to the grindstone, buckle down, and plow through difficult times.
There is always light at the end of the tunnel.
Yes, it's hard. No, it's not fair. Life isn't fair, and no one ever said that it was. So we all sacrifice because people took out loans they could never afford to repay. We all sacrifice rather than cutting public spending for those that need it. We do what needs to be done, no matter how hard it is.
We all sacrifice ... so that our elected officials can live the life of Riley.
From July 2009 through March 2010, our elected officials in Washington spent $2.6 million on food and beverages. It must be nice to have the taxpayers buy your breakfast, lunch, and dinner on a regular basis. I wish my job or my husband's job provided that perk, rather than making us buy our own food out of the salaries we receive.
Of that $2.6 million sum, $604,000 was spent on bottled water. Don't worry though, they probably recycled the little plastic bottles.
The biggest slice of the Congressional spending report was handed to retirees. While most of us in the private sector have had our retirement accounts wiped out in the past two or three years, the Federal Employees Retirement System spent more than $80 million in benefits for retired federal employees.
This is just tip of the iceberg of what these public servants spend on perks and benefits. I'm not saying they shouldn't have access to office supplies; I'm just saying they should be aware of the hand that quite literally feeds them.
Way to go Congress. No wonder your approval ratings are in the toilet.

The inequities of Congress vs. Mainstream America is amazing. I just think of the amazing debt our government is racking up for us and our children, their children? It's amazing as our government is racking up the debt the number of articles I read about how Americans are saving more than ever (4% but more than what we used to) and paying off their debt yet our government is doing the exact opposite. Which will mean tax hikes and who knows what else. So while we're trying to save every penny for the just in case my husband/wife gets laid off, they're making sure that money we're so diligently saving will soon go into their coffers when they raise our taxes.
The differences between what the avg. person would do to dig themselves out of debt vs. what congress does while in debt is kind of astounding. I do truly wish that it was only thier food budget that was like this- but it's not.
It's so frustrating to read about the waste in our government. I have this fantasy, my representative would make the median average wage of the people whom he represents - in my small Ohio town that would be $42,500 per year. He would own ONE home costing no more than $139,000 (average for our area) in Ohio. He would drive to DC (completely acceptable) and have a gas allowance no more than the IRS would allow for reimbursement. He will buy his food, his clothing, his insurance, etc. etc. etc. at the same places I do out of his paycheck (just like me). His retirement will be a 401K which will be taken out of his paycheck and only matched by his "employer" in the event of a profit at year end. Instead of vacationing with lobbyist for free (I know, their not "allowed" to do this), he would have to save all year for his family's vacation. After living this life for just a few years, then and only then, may he announce to the world that he "represents" his district in Ohio. Ahhhhh it's a great fantasy!!!!!!
MomIwant- I have often thought of that myself! Why aren't our representatives making minimum wage? ESPECIALLY when this country is so far in debt? Why are they so extremely far above the majority of Americans financially when they are supposed to be serving their country?
Really, I think that representing your state, through the Senate or Congress, has become so much less about what the people want (and need) and far more about becoming rich and extremely well off. When they hell did they go from being 'one of us' to being practically like royalty? Why haven't Congress or the Senate taken a pay cut??
