Love Parade 2010

UPDATE: CNN reports the death toll to be 19 as of Sunday afternoon and that 300-400 people were injured.

At least 16 people were reported dead and hundreds possibly injured after a mass stampede at the Love Parade 2010 in Duisburg, Germany.

According to CNN, when 1.4 million people showed up for the techno concert that was expecting no more than 800,000, they opened an expansion area of the venue. A stampede occurred when people tried to rush in from both ends of a tunnel leading to it.

While people were carried away by emergency vehicles people continued to dance inside. "Police were afraid that ending the music altogether could cause further unrest among the massive crowd," CNN stated.

“It was hell,” a witness told the Daily Telegraph. “The tunnel was dark, it was full. Something happened - whether someone tripped or someone fell I don’t know. But there was a stampede to get to the other end and those who fell… well, many of them never got up again.”

I can't imagine the horror of finding yourself in such a situation and not being able to do anything about it. I've certainly been at some packed concerts and sporting events in my life, but nothing like this.

Love to all the victims and their families ...

Have you ever been in a stampede situation?
