Now that my kids are finally (finally!) out of daycare and I have some freed-up funds, I can afford something I've worked long and hard for: a housecleaning service. This is important to a full-time working mom like me, not just for my sanity and my marriage, but for my kids, as I'd much rather spend my weekends with them than with my vacuum cleaner and scrub brush.
The woman from the cleaning ad gave me an almost hard-to-refuse price. But when she insisted on being paid in cash, I knew she was an illegal alien. I will not hire her. As much as I hate to pass up a good deal, I will grit my teeth and go with the service using legal workers that costs $40 more.
President Obama, in a speech at American University yesterday, highlighted a number of his solutions to the illegal immigration problem, and tamping down on businesses that hire from this pool of 11 million law-breaking immigrants (of all races and nationalities) like my cleaning woman is one of them.
This is a good start, but businesses probably wouldn't hire as many of these workers if more people like me refused to hire those businesses in the first place.
Obama is on the right track with his immigration reform, though I diverge on his border philosophy. We DO need to secure the border before we tackle the longer-term issues, else we lose all hope of ever getting things under control. But even before the border, it starts with you and me.
Many of the illegal aliens I know (and bosh to that "undocumented worker" crap, we should call them what they are) are lovely, hardworking people who I'd actually love to hire to help them build a better life in this country. As Obama says, immigrants have and always will be a part of the "fabric," ingenuity, and hope of America.
But why should I work hard every day, week after week, year after year, to watch taxes drain my paycheck faster than a vampire on True Blood, and then hand over the remainder to someone who gets to keep it all? If they want some of mine, they have to give up some of theirs. Fair's fair. And it's in their best interest, too.
I've seen how badly some of these workers are treated by their employers. When we had our roof replaced, the American contractor used mostly illegal aliens (and this is when we vowed we would never hire another company who did this again), and he barely gave them breaks for lunch. And based on the low quote he gave us, far lower than many of his competitors, I'm guessing their wages were not spectacular, either.
And this isn't just about people who come from south of the border. The guys who redid our wood floors five years ago -- all lily-white Irish guys -- were also here past their visa expiration date, which we found out after the fact. So don't assume based on color. Ask them!
And here's another side benefit to refusing to hire illegal aliens for jobs around the house that's really a separate problem altogether: Our uppity kids. Today's American teens can and should be doing many of these jobs, but they don't because they believe it's "beneath them." I can't tell you how many teens I know who say they can't find a summer job "because of the economy." True, they can't find the job they'd like to have -- a cushy desk job in an air-conditioned office doing something "creative" -- but they can probably operate a paint brush just fine if they'd take their entitlement factor down a notch or two.
Think of immigration just like parenting. We're not being hard-ass because we hate you, but because we love you and all you do for us. We want you to have a great life, but you have to follow the rules, else we'll always resent you. Small efforts make all the difference. And taking a tough line in the beginning leads to a more disciplined, responsible, appreciative child in the end. And hopefully, one who also obeys the law.
Have you or would you hire an illegal alien to do work around your house or for your company?

I would never hire an illegal alien. For all of the reasons stated above. Plus, Seeing how hard and how much my husband works to support our family, I couldn't just give money to the same people that are partially responsible for him having to pay so much in taxes.
it sounds more like the lesson your giving your kids is mine mine mine!
do u think u can find a gringo willing to work for 5$ or $7 miserable dollars per hour?? illegals are honest and hard working ppl, they learn inglish, MOST follow the rules & MOST pay taxes.illgals like the hard WORK! that MOST lazy ass gringos wont do. most american teens are in jobs that are "under the shadow" as we say in spanish "bajo la sombra".. plz tell if u ever saw an american teen, a gringo, black or chines working in construction jobs, cement, ceramic,plumbing.. cutting lawns etc... amerikans claim that illgals take there jobs but thats just stupid, if they are not willing to work for 5$ dollars per hour then who else is gonna do that low paying job?? ppl like u are ignorant and stupid, think befo spreading ur hate gringa pendej@@
I would have at least asked to see her green card before assuming she was illegal. Talk about profiling. My maids also get paid in cash. They are lily white (except for one black guy who comes sometimes), with US accents, and it's highly unlikely they are illegal aliens. There may be other reasons to be paid in cash.
If I expect to pay someone over $600 per year (as with my Honduran-born nanny), (a) I require a copy of some document proving legal status in the USA and (b) I will send a 1099 to the IRS; and (c) I'd have to pay by check only if it was a deductible business expense. (When interviewing for a nanny, the one person who refused to comply with these requirements was a US-born individual who probably didn't intend to pay taxes. Hope she found a job because I didn't hire her.)
Oh, and I'd never pay someone below what their work is worth just because I could get away with it.
you wouldn't help someone in need? it was against the law to harbor jews. it was against the law to harbor slaves. they were illegal. people are more important than politics. that cleaning woman could have children to feed and she could come from a country with egregious human rights violations. it's highly unlikely that she's even making enough money to even be required to pay taxes. so you can get all caught up in your illogical anger and throw away that extra $40 on some silly principle or you can do the christian thing and help another human being. it's not a "handout" cuz she's working her butt off ... and it's not nearly as dangerous as harboring jews or slaves. got to stick to those rules though. if you were truly christian, you'd hire the cleaning woman and then take the extra $40 you saved and give it to charity. (btw, you're not paying extra money because the workers are getting paid more, your paying more $$ to put in the pockets of the boss!!!!) maybe this woman needs the money to pay fees to get legal status ... do you really think she wants to remain illegal? and did you even bother to ASK or did you profile her? keep telling yourself the "we love you" lie, and see what god has to say when you reach those pearly gates.
I got such a kick out of rodriguez's laughably ridiculous comments, in part:
"do u think u can find a gringo willing to work for 5$ or $7 miserable dollars per hour?? illegals are honest and hard working ppl, they learn inglish,"
Okay, first of all, whether rodriguez is illegal or not, he certainly hasn't learned English if his post is any indication. Also can anyone find anything wrong with this statement: "illegals are honest and hard working people." Seems to me if they're here illegally, well then, they're not all that honest, are they?
[[ ppl like u are ignorant and stupid, think befo spreading ur hate gringa pendej@@]]
The unbridled hatred and contempt that "rodriguez" has for, presumably, legal, non-Latino US citizens is frightening and all the more reason we need to continue working against illegal immigration and people like rodriguez who thumb their noses at our laws.
Finally, however, after those of us in Southern California and the southwest have been SCREAMING about this for years, we're no longer being ignored. The rest of the country is at long last waking up about this problem, and despite Obama's insane and traitorous meddling (and I am embarrassed to admit I voted for him), our side - the side of legal US citizens - is slowly winning.
Jessica writes: "you wouldn't help someone in need? it was against the law to harbor jews."
No one is exterminating those who come to the US illegally in their own countries. You're comparing victims of the Holocaust - the Holocaust, Jessica! - to people who have decided it's easier to break our laws and exploit our resources at the detriment of our citizens rather than stay in their own countries and fight for change!
"so you can get all caught up in your illogical anger and throw away that extra $40 on some silly principle or you can do the christian thing and help another human being."
Illogical anger?!
Show me charity when your child needs to go to an ER overcrowded with illegals who come in for free medical care for the common cold. Let's see you be so magnanimous once your public school is crammed with the children of illegals, and your kids' education suffers terribly due to overcrowded classrooms and teachers who have to spend extra time with students who speak no English.
Jessica, you clearly do not live in an area that has been decimated due to unchecked illegal immigration. Bring your touchy-feely ideals to my neighborhood in So. California. Buy a home in my community and then 3 months later tell us how sympathetic you are to the plight of those who have made our local area such a paradise.
You find the principles of the article's writer silly. I find yours to be ignorant and dangerous.
And who would pick lettuce for our troops?
One question I have is that how do we know when the border is secured. What is the definition of secured border, will the Administration or the GOP or the individual states be the one who declare that the border is secured. I think you can always say the border can be MORE secured. Is it when there is NO illegals crossing over, none? If you can't define what is a secured border now, we will never have secured border, the government will keep pouring money and people into trying to make the border more secured with no end in sight. In this case, secured border is never going to happen therefore immigration reform will never happen? Or is this what GOP wants afterall.
