Manute BolLegendary basketball player and humanitarian Manute Bol died today. He was 47.

I would be hard pressed to name many basketball stars I know, but Manute I knew. Most people did, not only because of his skills, but because of his height.

At 7-feet- 7 inches, he was on of the NBAs tallest players ... and one of the most charitable.

Originally from Sudan, Bol played for the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat.

During and after his career he was a fierce advocate for Sudan and the betterment of the country.

"He ... was continually giving of himself through his generosity and humanitarian efforts in order to make the world around him a much better place, for which he will always be remembered," said Ed Stefanski, 76ers president and general manager, in a statement.

According to Sports Illustrated, Bol was hospitalized and being treated for "severe kidney trouble and a painful skin condition" at the time of his death.

RIP, Manute.
