Photo by Kristen BonsOn Monday, Helen Thomas retired from her career as a journalist for United Press International at the ripe old age of 89. The now former member of the White House Press Corps did not step out gracefully with a Costco cake and warm wishes for happy golden years from President Obama.
Ms. Thomas retired after making some spectacularly inappropriate comments that even White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs condemned. He stated in a press conference Monday morning, "Obviously those remarks do not reflect the opinions of most of the people in here, and certainly not of the Administration."
So what did Helen Thomas say? Remember, this is a woman that called sitting President George W. Bush the worst president in history. You'd think that she'd be old enough to remember what journalistic integrity was, but I guess not. But even that inappropriate, off-the-record comment pales in comparison to what she said last week.
Jews should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go home" to Germany and Poland.
There are so many things wrong with Helen Thomas's comment that it's hard to know where to begin in dissecting it. Let's start with the historical inaccuracy, shall we? If anything, the Jews are home in Israel. You know, where Jerusalem is? Where the Temple of David used to be? Where the most famous Jew in history, Jesus of Nazareth, fed the hungry, healed the sick, and let the little children come to him? Israel, not Germany nor Poland, is the ancestral home to the Jews.
Now let's examine the social side of the comment. Is it possible for an educated person to think Germany, Poland, and Jews at the same time and not also think Holocaust? I doubt there's a single person reading this that doesn't know what I'm referring to, so I won't bother you with any word pictures like "Jews in Germany and Poland during WWII were kidnapped and shoved into giant ovens where they died an agonizing death as the flesh melted from their bones." I won't even bother to tell you that the word Holocaust itself comes from the Greek word holokauston, meaning a "whole (holos) burnt (kaustos)" sacrificial offering to a god.
I learned about the massacre of the Jews in Germany and Poland in history class and from watching Schindler's List. Helen Thomas is old enough to have reported on the stories in real time. (She didn't, as far as I know, I'm just saying she is old enough to have done so.) She should know of the atrocities that took place against the Jews in those countries and be culturally sensitive enough to not make such asinine and hurtful comments.
A lot of people have said that this fiasco is akin to someone asking blacks in America to "go home" to Africa, but that is a faulty analogy. For one thing, blacks actually did come from Africa, while Jews did not historically come from Germany or Poland. For another thing, Africans didn't famously, in memorable history, gather up 6 million black people and cook them.
No, I'd have to say that a much better analogy for Helen Thomas's now infamous "go home" comment is telling black Americans to go home to the plantations. You know, to be slaves again. She's probably old enough to remember that too.
Helen Thomas's words were inexcusable, abominable, repugnant, hateful, offensive, and just plain in bad taste. And that's without my thesaurus! I for one am glad that this mean old lady won't be reporting the news to us any longer.
Go home, Helen Thomas. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

As a longtime admirer of Helen Thomas, it's heartbreaking to me that her inappropriate comments may overshadow her trail-blazing role as a female journalist. A really sad situation, IMHO.
"I learned about the massacre of the Jews in Germany and Poland in history class and from watching Schindler's List." Are you serious? Please don't even attempt to write an article if you don't know anything about the Jews in Israel. You should learn about the present conflict in Palestine and not wait for the movie version to come out in the future.
The "occupied" meme can be taken even farther. Bethlehem, the town where Jesus was born, the ancestral home of King David (back in the days when he was a sheep herder, before he took on Goliath) is on the West Bank and is almost entirely devoid of Jews.
While Jesus did go to Jerusalem, He spent much of his ministry in the hills of Judea. The province next door was Samaria. There wasn't a lot of love lost; to describe what a real neighbor was Jesus posited something Judeans probably considered silly - A Good Samaritan. The parts of Israel that we read about in the Bible as Judea and Samaria are today known as the "West Bank." So who are the occupiers?
However, as I have noted elsewhere, it's important to be fair to Helen Thomas. The last time she was in what she calls "Occupied Palestine" it was indeed occupied territory. It's just that the occupying forces were Roman.
It is sad that she's going out this way. I can remember ALWAYS seeing her face at White House press conferences, and hearing her ask intelligent, insightful questions, from Kennedy on to the present. She should have retired before the bile buried inside her spilled out and caused her resignation in disgrace. It's a pity she didn't.
One more point. In the years of II World War, Poland was occupied - thus one cannot really speak about an independent country. It was annexed, administrated and occupied by Nazi Germany.
Poland lost high percentage of its citizens: over six million perished, including three million Polish Jews

Clearly she had forgotten how to act like a journalist (assuming she ever knew) so it was time to go.
By "act like a journalist" (ideally), I mean not letting your own personal opinion interfere with your work.
BUT, the real reason for the reaction here isn't that she was biased - the folks who ran her out on the rail are normally quite comfortable with "journalistic" bias (if that isn't an oxymoron). The real reason is that what she said wasn't PC. You are not allowed to say anything about Jews. Israel can do no wrong. There is never a case where a community harmed by Israeli policies is allowed to complain, let alone seek justice. You are not allowed to care about Palestine if it means regretting something Israel has done. Can it be that Americans' DNA is degenerating? This is beyond sad.
Had she said "the Christians need to get out of Baghdad," nobody would have cared. Had she said "the US needs to get out of the Middle East," she would have won a freakin' award. But when it comes to Israel, nobody is permitted a moment of rational thought.
Just remember, the largest concentration of Jews on Earth isn't in Israel and certainly not Palestine; it's in New York City.
Another sad example of journalistic bias. Hrw questions at the White House have become more and more questionable in the last decade.
There's a time to call it honey, and your time was up decades ago...

I was being FUNNY Paula. From your comments, you obviously don't understand the article.
Brilliant article, Jenny (even though you got your background info from a MOVIE!!!) Just absolutely brilliant! While she was not reporting anything when she made that infamous statement, she should still have known better than to voice such an opinion, especially in an interview. I really don't know what she thought would happen, what the repercussions would be. Oh, wait, she wasn't thinking, was she? So, yes, it is time for her to go. Maybe she can join Harry & Nancy at Sunny Meadows in the fall, after the election? They can reminisce all the good old days!
lol at Harry and Nancy at Sunny Meadows...
