I'm sure that most of those military types were scratching their heads.
It's hard to get into West Point. You have to really, really want to go there, you have to be super-strong and whip smart, and above all, you have to love America and promise to defend it to the death. It's not exactly a place for pansies, as well suited as a pansy might be elsewhere. Say in a pink tank top on her couch with her laptop clacking out a post on American exceptionalism for The Stir.
Yeah, you heard me. I'm a pansy. At least when stacked against a West Point graduate. But I do love America, and I will fight to the hard drive death for it.
President Obama told the crowd at West Point that "stronger international standards and institutions" could lead toward the resolution of challenges such as terrorism, nuclear proliferation, climate change, and economic decline.
"Our adversaries would like to see America sap its strength by overextending our power," Obama said. "So we have to shape an international order that can meet the challenges of our generation."
I for one am curious as to how Greece is going to help shape an international order that will help California with its pension problem. In case you hadn't heard, Greece is bankrupt. California is not far behind on Financial Meltdown Pkwy.
In other America-isn't-really-that-great-news, Mexican President Felipe Calderon recently visited the White House to chum around with President Obama. Our south-of-the-border neighbor wasted no time in letting us greedy American racists know that we'll be even more greedy and racist if we try to actually enforce our laws and close the border. President Obama agreed with him.
Let's take a step back here, shall we? Why are we down-playing America's exceptionalism? America is fantastic and awesome and not without its flaws, but it's certainly better than anything else out there.
America is not a monster. It is a powerhouse filled with generous and caring citizens. Even in the midst of a recession, Americans gave more to the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti than any other country.
We've been the land of opportunity for centuries; the place where people came and still come to make their dreams a reality. Through the freedom to improve our own lives, we've become the greatest nation in the history of the world. It is nothing to apologize for. And we will certainly not improve our situation by bowing and cow towing to other nations in a new international order.
I wish our President were as proud of his country as the vast majority of the men and women that he represents.

II totally agree. He seems to be tippy toeing around to international dignitaries apologizing for us. After 9/11 we were all so proud and united and then something changed. I cant explain it. Doubt set in, regret, and somehow, SOME of us became ashamed of where we come from and who we are. Not me. Good piece, Jenny.

Well of COURSE Obama and co aren't going to proclaim any kind of "exceptionalism"...they've got the revisionist history that says our country was founded by monsters down pat!
Really though, what happened to loving our country? It's been a rough last...well really since 1962, but this is still the only country on the planet that I'd want to call home.
I totally agree with you (again)!!!!
The West Point faculty and cadets are my friends and neighbors, and yes, they are pretty amazing "non-pansies." I respectfully disagree with your viewpoint, and Iiving among them, I know that many of the cadets here do too (just as, of course, there are those who agree with you). That aside, I wanted to point out that for the first time ever, two female cadets earned top West Point honors: Alexandra Rosenberg was class valedictorian and Elizabeth Betterbed earned the highest cadet performance score. That makes me proud to be an American -- and a woman too.
Jenny, I love your columns!! They are exceptional! I could not watch Obama give that speech to the cadets at West Point. I just cannot listen to him speak anymore. He rarely seems to know what is really going on, and I'm tired to death of him apologizing for how wonderful this country is! Any time there is trouble, America is called on. But according to our administration, we are full of greedy, racist, capitalist, imperialist, evil, arrogant, dismissive people who don't care about anyone else in the world. And I have also seen more of that attitude than I can believe here on Cafemom! I am so glad that the Texas BoE will be correcting our history, so our children can begin to learn how great we are! I am one Proud American Mama!
Congrats to Alexandra Rosenberg and Elizabeth Betterbed!
The author itemized many viewpoints/opinions Suzanne, so exactly which ones do you and those you speak with disagree with the author? Would appreciate clarification and specifics, 90% of the military I know do not appreciate the President endless apology tour, and downgrading of our proud history, and I know many with actual battle experience in these wars and others.
Just heard that our commander in chief will not be at Arlington on Memorial Day, yet another sign of disrespect for our veterans and history. He astounds me, the major role our constitution gives the President, and he ignores this honor and duty. I guess maybe he would be uncomfortable giving only honor to those who sacrificed so much. Probably figured he couldnt give that apology discourse and shame on America that he has delivered over and over again. Or maybe he could give the speech about how our military murdered civilians( without facts/evidence that he gave on the senate floor. Or how he insisits that our law enforcement incapable of following the law (the Az Immigration Law), or calling Crowley stupid. Second thought I dont want him at Arlington. he doesnt deserve to be there...
