You turn on the TV, find out that it's going to rain, check the scores from last night's game, hear about what crimes were committed, and learn what famous married person slept around. That's what the daily news is coming to these days, with the latest being Indiana Congressman Mark Souder's resignation following an affair with part-time staffer Tracy Meadows Jackson.
Souder, a staunch family-values, anti-drug Evangelical Christian, announced his resignation this morning, first reported by Fox News.
We'll get to that. It's more of the same I have sinned, please forgive me, we must press on for the cause, blah blah blah.
So who is the woman? That's what we really all want to know. That's allegedly her in the video with Souder. It kinda makes me queasy looking at them both acting all serious and professional on the outside, when on the inside what they are really thinking about is jumping each other.
Here are some details about Jackson ...
According to Fox News and numerous other news outlets, it's Tracy Jackson, a very attractive aide in her 40s who works in Souder's Indiana district office.
She handled communications for Souder in the district and produced several videos like the one above, interviewing him on issues such as abortion, abstinence education, and the public expression of religion.
According to Legistorm.com, Jackson earned $12,541.70 from Souder's office last year.
She came to work for Souder in December 2004 as what is described as a "special assistant/communications." She earned $533.33 that year.
She was still working there as of Monday, but who knows what's changed in the last couple hours now that the news is out.
Souder is 60. And married. And has kids.
Here's part of Souder's online statement. I don't know what's more annoying, his words or the fact that he wrote it in blaring all-caps. Read the complete Souder resignation statement at Fox:
IN THE POISONOUS ENVIRONMENT OF WASHINGTON DC, ANY PERSONAL FAILING IS SEIZED UPON, OFTEN TWISTED, FOR POLITICAL GAIN. I AM RESIGNING RATHER THAN TO PUT MY FAMILY THROUGH THAT PAINFUL, DRAWN-OUT PROCESS. DIANE AND MY FAMILY WERE MORE THAN WILLING TO STAND HERE WITH ME. WE ARE A COMMITTED FAMILY. BUT THE ERROR IS MINE AND I SHOULD BEAR THE RESPONSIBILITY, NOT ONLY AM I THANKFUL FOR A LOVING FAMILY BUT FOR A LOVING GOD. MY COMFORT IS THAT GOD IS A GRACIOUS AND FORGIVING GOD TO THOSE WHO SINCERELY SEEK HIS FORGIVENESS AS I DO.
