kim kardashian valentines m&msWhat's it like to wake up as Kim Kardashian -- on Valentine's Day? Does a white, winged horse gently nuzzle your face while butterflies tickle your toes? Does the Kim Kardashian Gold atomizer start pumping Kim smell into the room while a curly-haired cherub gently strokes a harp? And does a wee, green leprechaun slide down a rainbow into a pot of gold -- oh wait, wrong holiday. And does a shirtless man with pecs of platinum show up carrying a Volkswagen-sized heart-shaped box full of personalized M&M's just for you?

"OMG, look, KAN-DEEEYYYYY! And it's in pretty Valentine's Day colors and they put my name on them and everything! Squeeeee! I'm the luckiest girl in the whole, wide world!"

Valentine's Day Guide

valentine's dayValentine's Day is encroaching and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Every year it pops up here in the middle of February, and every year we either clamour for dinner reservations with our lover boys or drink to our single heart's content alone on the couch. I mean, that's what everyone says you do, but really, why would I sit on the couch when lying in bed with my Merlot is so much more comfy and cozy. Please.

Anyway, if you happen to find yourself single this Valentine's Day, don't hide in bed. Don't sit on the couch. And for god's sake, don't tweet about how "lonely" you are. Instead, TREAT YO SELF. Make it the one day this year that you treat yo self to some cupcakes, to mimosas, or to some fine. leather. goods. Parks and Rec was definitely on to something. So! In that vein, here are 5 ideas to get you thinking about how you'll want to pamper yourself this Valentine's/Singles Awareness Day.

valentineI'm not a big believer in Valentine's Day. My husband is the romantic one in our marriage while I roll my eyes at the sappy cards he presents me with year after year. Last year, after celebrating 15 years of me griping about the price of flowers and returning jewelry I didn't like, he finally got the hint and got me ... nothing. Unlike most of my friends, I really didn't mind. Plus, compared to some of the whoppers below, nothing seems like the best gift ever.

eggs in basketAnything better than breakfast in bed? If you ask me, then yes, yes there is. Breakfast in bed is messy. And hard to eat. Between all the pillows and the breakable glassware and the whole crumbs issue, I find the gesture to be highly overrated. However! There are all kinds of fun and quixotic ways to serve up the most important meal of the day that won't leave you worried about staining your sheets or getting oatmeal on the lampshade.

So this Valentine's Day, consider these 5 romantic breakfast ideas that will show your loved ones just how much you care. Nothing says "I love you" more than eggs in a heart-shaped basket, right?

The Hidden Meaning of Valentine's Day Gifts

Posted by Eden M. Kennedy

valentinesI've always loved making unusual valentines to express the goofiness of my love. One year I made my husband a basket filled with pink donuts and toothbrushes; it showed I wanted to please his palate, but I also cared about his dental health. Another year I just took a check from our checkbook and made it out to him for the amount of "one million blow jobs." It made him laugh and acknowledged the fact that after five years of togetherness we had become exceedingly, comically blunt with each other.

On Valentine's Day we might want to find a way to convey a big message simply: our love is eternal, I appreciate you, you still turn me on. But sentiments like that don't always get to the heart of what keeps love alive. The Victorians used the language of flowers to acknowledge the complexity, the messiness, and the practical side of their unspoken feelings, so why can't we use symbols, too?

Vanilla Bean & Cherry Swirled Icebox Cookies for Your Valentines

Recipe A Day

icebox cookiesLooking for something sweet for the sweeties in your life as Valentine's Day approaches? Look no further than these delicious and lovely vanilla bean and cherry swirled icebox cookies.

From Shugary Sweets, they combine two doughs -- one a vanilla, sugar-cookie-like dough, and the other with a subtle touch of cherry flavor. Rolled together, they're both pretty and delicious. As she noted on her blog, next time she would perhaps add a hint of red food coloring to make the colors pop just a little more, and I agree they can use just a slight boost from it. It's also a great recipe to double, as you can keep the dough in the freezer, then just slice and bake for fresh, warm cookies anytime.
