5 Backyard Tents That Make Shady, Lazy Summer Hideaways

Posted by Gabrielle Blair

I don't know about you, but as a kid, I loved any chance I got to "camp out" in the backyard with my siblings and friends. Usually, this meant sleepovers on the trampoline. We had so much fun!

Wouldn't it be awesome to construct a backyard tent setup like the one pictured above? My kids would go crazy for something like that! Truthfully, I think I'd be the one sneaking away to read a good book (or maybe take a nap!) in there as often as I could.

A backyard tent doesn't have to be elaborate. So in that spirit, I've gathered 4 more fun tent inspirations below.

Parents Who Built Nightclub in Their Basement Are Geniuses

My son is only 6 years old, but I've already caught myself worrying about how I'm going to keep tabs on him once he gets older and wants to go out with his friends all the time. (Hold me.)

High schoolers love to be independent and have fun, but the fear of them getting into some kind of trouble is always looming. Thankfully, I have a few more years before I have to be too concerned about my little guy's whereabouts.

One couple in England named Claire Farrow and Ian Hogarth, however, came up with the ultimate solution to keep their teenagers under wraps. They simply built a nightclub complete with flashing lights, a dance floor, and a DJ booth in the basement of their home. Is this the most genius move you've ever heard or what?

I think soothing is what most people go for when it comes to creating a nursery, and soothing is exactly what designer Lindsay Brier managed to achieve with this space for her son, Hawken. Its neutral base with bright pops of orange could definitely work for either gender. But she also used stripes!

See more about how she decorated her baby's room, below.

These Home Organization Ideas Belong in the Trash

Posted by Amy Keyishian
on Feb 20, 2012 at 6:30 PM

playroomI would dearly love to be organized. I go to friends’ houses and think, “Everything has its place.” By contrast, in my home, everything has its place, and that place is … everywhere.

I'm a sucker for articles on sites like Houzz.com about getting clutter under control, but they always show magazine-ready rooms bathed in gentle morning light with hardwood floors and plenty of room. When Remodelista starts putting out a weekly newsletter called “closet-sized rentals with ugly carpeting made to look kinda cute despite themselves,” I will jettison the self-flagellation and sign right up.

And then sometimes, I just get snarky and sit around thinking up obnoxious comebacks for perfectly nice organizing tips. Cue my mom: “If you spent this much energy following those Flylady tips, your house would look like Gwyneth Paltrow’s!”

Maybe so. But this is what you get from Sister Slacker-Snark. So enjoy.

Okay, for those of you who didn't feel the last nursery I featured was girly enough, I hope this one pleases your desire for pink. Yvonne decorated this nursery for her little baby girl with a splash of bright green on the walls and pink accents throughout.
