8 Tips for Spring Cleaning Your Closet

Posted by Mary Fischer
on Apr 19, 2012 at 2:41 PM

closetOk -- be honest. Is your bedroom closet all nice and neat and organized? Or does it more closely resemble the aftermath of a major natural disaster (like mine does)?

Every single time the seasons change, I vow to clean out the walk-in closet in my master bedroom (that you can't even walk into anymore because of all the stuff on the floor), but somehow the task never gets done. And honestly, it's because I go in there with every intention of clearing things out, but then I get overwhelmed and have no idea where to start, so I give up entirely.

But luckily for unorganized gals like me, there are people out there like Coriann Bright, a professional organizer with her own company Bright Living, who can help take the stress and guesswork out of getting a closet in order.

Step Into Kim Kardashian's Rainbow Shoe Closet & Get Inspired

kim kardashian shoesKim Kardashian is not the first person I'd go to for home decor inspiration, but maybe she should be. Have you seen her shoe closet? Oh the sweet rainbow of orderly hues! Girlfriend's got all 18 bajillion of her shoes neatly arranged by color. This photo is just one of three pretty, pretty shoe closet pictures she posted via Instagram.

Inspiring, no? Not that I have as many shoes as that. It takes exactly 30 seconds for me to arrange the three burlap-and-rope bundles I wear as shoes (just kidding, sort of). But as a home design motif, the rainbow is the way to go.

How To Be a Great Last-Minute Gift-Giver

Posted by Eden M. Kennedy
on Dec 22, 2011 at 5:36 PM

"You know what would be great?" said my husband last summer. "One of those heavy grill press things that keeps meat and bacon from curling up when you're cooking it." You know what he's getting for Christmas? A heavy grill press thing that keeps bacon from curling up when you cook it. He never bothered to put it on his wish list, I just made a mental note and bought one, and I plan to pat myself on the back every time he uses it.

This, I like to think, exemplifies a crucial aspect of skillful gift-giving: listening. Another crucial aspect: remembering. Also crucial: time, money, and feeling some affection for the person you're buying for.

But what if it's December 22 and none of those aspects are in place, and suddenly you need to pick up a little something for the person in your office who invited you to cocktails Friday night? Or your husband's step-sister who suddenly decided to fly in from Norway? Or the sitter who's coming. over. right. now?

Lego ApartmentOh man! This single guy and his teeny apartment, which he designed to work like a Murphy bed (from the kitchen to the bedroom to the deck!), are a total inspiration. Would we want to live in a tiny space that required us to fold out every household item when we needed it? That would be a no. But can we steal some usable tips from his obsessive, adorable project -- ones that create room in our cramped abodes without breaking the bank?

Here’s a look at some around-the-web suggestions that fit this challenge:

Yet Another Man Lives With Dead Body: This Time It’s Grandma!

mesy closestMaybe I spend too much time online looking for this kind of stuff, but there seems to be lots of stories going around these days of people shacking up with dead folks. I'm serious! First, there was the story of the Ohio man who sat in a chair for two years, fused to it, and died while he was living with his girlfriend and a friend; then there was the story of Ronald Opilka, who lived with his deceased mother for two months; now there's Larry Davis, who kept his dead grandmother in his closet under piles of clothes for two days -- and Nakeema Craig, who was there the whole time and didn't realize it.

Okay, as for Nakeema, it legitimately sounds like she didn't know there was a body in the apartment. Apparently the potent stench of marijuana was the scent of choice for the place for those two days. As for Larry, well, it sounds like he killed her. So, maybe he's totally okay with living with a dead person because he's a sociopath.

The Ultimate Hoarder Keeps Mom Around

Posted by April Peveteaux
on Mar 17, 2011 at 8:10 PM

hoarder dead bodyIf you think you've seen it all on Hoarders, think again. A non-celebrity hoarder just proved that those people who go on television are simply amateurs. Disgusting amateurs, but they've got nothing on Gladys Bergmeier of St. Louis, Missouri, who died in February before she could enjoy the attention her crazy hoarding would bring. After her death, a relative with the unfortunate job of cleaning out Bergmeier's home stumbled upon a pretty horrific discovery in one of the overly crowded rooms.

Wrapped in multi-colored curtains and a plastic sheet, with an expired bottle of orange juice from 2003, the cleaner found a dead, mummified body. Although not yet proven, the belief is it's Gladys Bergmeier's mother, also named Gladys, who came to live with the younger Gladys in 1993.

Sounds very Grey Gardens meets Psycho, doesn't it?

'Sex and the City' Fan Spends $175K on Carrie Closet!

Posted by Lindsay Mannering
on Jan 25, 2011 at 8:50 AM

Chris Noth and Sarah Jessica ParkerCarrie Bradshaw once famously said, "I like my money right where I can see it ... hanging in my closet."

And on Long Island, an anonymous woman recently said, "I like my money right where I can see it ... hanging in the balance of the design work done by the contractors I hired to build me a replica of Carrie's dream closet."

Well, something like that.

We all know that in the first movie, Mr. Big buys Carrie an amazing, spared-no-expense closet to house her designer duds and Manolo Blahniks in perfect serenity. A Mr. Big wannabe (and I mean that as a compliment) did the same for his hardworking, career-oriented wife, and he built her a gosh-darn dream-come-true closet the size of your garage.

Jealous? Hell yeah ya are!

linen closet organizationClutter, clutter everywhere! Especially during the holidays. There's paper and bows, all the stuff you tossed in the closet hoping the in-laws wouldn't see, and yes, you've even reverted to shoving stuff under the bed in the mad rush to clean. Your purse is a mess, the pantry's a wreck, and can you even see under your sink anymore?

Wouldn't it be awesome to start the new year with a clean, fresh, clutter-free home?

I consulted Jill Pollack Lewis, organization guru, about easy ways we can de-clutter our homes in just 10 days.
