We have a beautiful light weight quilt that my MIL made us as a wedding gift; I use it in the spring/ summer and then use a thicker comforter in the winter. It works out well because I'd get bored with the bedding if it never changed, and my inlaws tend to visit in the summer, so they can see that we're enjoying the quilt that she worked so hard on. Everyone wins.
