A Robot Stand-In for Groundhog Day?

groundhogGroundhog Day is cruel to groundhogs, declares the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

So PETA's recommending a robotic substitute for the little furry weather forecaster.

Can you imagine?

That's right, PETA wants to replace famed Punxsutawney Phil with a robot groundhog at the well-known Pennsylvania Groundhog Day festival. They feel keeping the groundhog in captivity and then parading him before a big crowd of onlookers every February 2nd is cruel.

In response, William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, says the groundhog is "being treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania."

I'm totally picturing the hilarious dancing groundhog in Caddyshack. Maybe he's available.

What do you think about Groundhog Day? Is it cruel and unusual punishment for groundhogs?
