Window Blinds, Shades Recalled After Kids' Deaths

by Kim Conte on August 27, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Nearly 5.5 million window coverings and blinds (many of which were sold exclusively at Target) were recalled this week after the death of three children and near-strangulation of seven other children.

The accidents occurred when the children became entangled in looped pull cords, as well as exposed inner cords and exposed lifting loops.

The six companies participating in the recall include Pottery Barn Kids, IKEA, Vertical Land Inc., Lewis Hyman Inc., Lutron Electronics Co. Inc. and Victoria Classics.

Check out the TODAY show Web site for a complete list of recalled window coverings.

Maybe I'm nuts but I never understand these recalls.  Why are your kids playing with the blinds in the first place?  Isn't it our jobs as parents to keep our children away from them instead of thinking that companies should make them safe to play in while still expecting to buy them from Target for 10 bucks?

    I totally agree with aurorabunny.
