summer safety guide

I was shocked when I heard that many of the available flea and tick products are toxic—and, therefore, harmful to people, pets, and the environment. Green Paws is a green living initiative and Web site dedicated to informing people of pet products that are harmful...

The site has a product guide to help you determine which flea and tick products are safe, as well as information about keeping your pets and families safe from poisonous products.

According to a post on Eco Child's Play, even some "all natural" herbal pet products are not as safe as you might think. For example, products containing the essential oils cinnamon, clove, geranium, tea tree, lavender, bay, and eucalyptus could cause an allergic reaction in pets and people and should be used sparingly—only after doing a spot check before overall application. And, products containing pennyroyal oil (found in many pet products) has been reported to cause seizures, comas, and even death in animals.

Be sure to check Green Paws to make sure your products are safe for your pets and your families.
