We've got a lot of carpet in our house (3 bedrooms, den, 2 hallways, plus the stairs). Ever since we moved in, we've always had our carpet professionally cleaned. To be honest, I never thought too much about it. The company would just come in once a year, do their thing, and leave. It was a little bit of a pain having a bunch of strangers in my house, but they did an OK job.
Of course, that was before we started having more kids and more pets. And as anyone with lightly colored carpet, three kids under age 10, and two Black Labs can tell you...it doesn't take very long for your carpet to turn into a disaster area!
A couple of months after the carpets got cleaned they'd start looking like a barn floor. Frankly, it was a little embarrassing. Now it's to the point where we're having our carpets professionally cleaned three times a year -- at around $170 per visit. That's adding up to some serious money.
I mean, I can't tell my 8 year old that we can't afford to buy him a new baseball glove because mommy had to have clean carpets. Then again, I can't stand another disapproving look from my mother-in-law when she glances down at our dirty carpets. So I started doing some research online and saw that a Carpet Cleaner pretty much pays for itself after two or three uses. And from what I saw, some of the newer models are as easy to use as a regular vacuum.
What do you think I should do? Has anyone else started cleaning their own carpets and had good results?

ive been cleaning my own carpets, but to tell the truth, nothing is going to help when you have kids, i need new but i just cant afford it at this time . my carpet is only 4 years old and it looks like it 20 years old , those darn kids.
I've been cleaning my own carpets for a few years now. I have light colored carpet, 3 boys, and 2 dogs. I have burned out 2 carpet cleaners. I am ready to just rip it all up and refurbish the hardwood. If I had to money I would.
Okay I just came across this. And I will tell you that it is MUCH better if you purchase your own carpet cleaner. We have 4 bedrooms, and two hallways. And yes, those pesky kiddos can do a number on them. And well, soooo can my lil dog. But he is potty trained now. YAY! But I have had my house and carpet cleaner for 2 years now and I just cleaned after a HUGE bday party and RAIN! Ohhh, and grass. Sooo yes, the money is worth buying a new one then having some people come in and do it for 170.00 bucks worth. And yes, you will be SOOOO HAPPY...ohhh, and read the instructions. LOL. I didn't the first time. LOL
Yes, I do clean my own carpets-I have 3 boys, two who are toddlers, 3 cats, and dark carpet. I fell in love with the Hoover Platinum vac that I received from Cafemom- and saw a commercial for the Hoover Platinum carpet cleaner. They have a payment plan-no credit check, and comes with the detergent of 85.00/mo that was something we could do. Their site is www.hooverplatinum.com for the special. Got the shampooer two weeks ago and LOVE the way my carpets come clean, dont stay wet for hours, and it is easy to move around-being 71/2months pregnant with my 4th child that is a plus for me.
I do not have a carpet cleaner right now but when I did I cleaned the floors all the time. With three boys and a husband that is as bad as they are and a dog they need cleaned regular. I love hoover and could never say anything bad about them as far as what I use to have.
Good luck!
You should by one. In the long run it will save you money. Yes it will seem like it is time consuming but really you don't have to do the whole house in one day. Do one room a week. Do research on which cleaner you want to get. Ask around, I am sure you will get lots of advice.
Another thing stop wasting money for someone else to come do it.:)
I LOVE having a carpet cleaner. They are cheaper then a good vacumm cleaner. The only thing i regret is not getting one with attachments.
By the way its a quick fix for any spills in the carpet.
