Kelly Ripa kicks off the charity event with Electrolux
Roving reporter NYCBrit was at the kickoff event and talked to Kelly Ripa about the charity, her favorite cupcakes, and the best way for busy moms to get involved in a good cause.
NYCBrit: Having a virtual bake sale is such a unique and fun way for people to get involved. How did that idea come about?
Kelly Ripa: We had a really good experience with the virtual T-mail for the ovarian cancer month for September. It was very successful. So naturally, it’s Valentine’s Day, so something sweet, something sassy, a cupcake!
NYCBrit: How would you design your virtual cupcake?
Kelly Ripa: Definitely it would be a Red Velvet cupcake. It would have cream cheese frosting and maybe some colorful frosting on top.
NYCBrit: What are your goals for this charity event with Electrolux?
Kelly Ripa: Our continuing goal is to raise $500,000. Ultimately our goal is to never have to raise another dollar because [ovarian cancer will] be a thing of the past. We want nothing more than to eradicate ovarian cancer. It’s so hard to detect, and that’s why it kills so many women. Our goal is to find an early detection system and ultimately a cure. I think every woman in this room knows someone or unfortunately will know someone that succumbs to ovarian cancer.
I feel very lucky. I’ve been very fortunate. I have healthy children, knock on wood, I’m a healthy woman, and I just want my daughter to grow up and not even know what ovarian cancer is. That’s all I want.
NYCBrit: What is your advice for moms out there who want to get involved?
Kelly Ripa: Be active. Just do something; do anything. I’m the type of person that goes "Ah, I should get involved in that," and then I turn the channel because I assume everybody else is going to do that. I do that.
Sometimes the best way to get involved is to just get involved. Jump in. Don’t hang up the phone, pick up the phone. Volunteer at the bake sale. Go online, register, and send a virtual cupcake to somebody. You can win a washer/dryer!
Virtual cupcakes may seem like nothing. They seem so insignificant, but they add up. They add up, and it really makes a difference. It makes a huge difference.
Go now. Send a virtual cupcake to a friend or loved one. Buy a limited edition T-shirt designed by Kelly Ripa. Help raise money for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF). You might also win a "Red Hot Red" washer and dryer from Electrolux. You might save a woman's life. And that would be sweet.
