DIY tassel bookmarkLooking for the perfect budget-friendly, DIY holiday gift for teachers, coworkers, stockings, or any of the avid readers on your list? Lavish your friends and family with a little extravagance by gifting them an Ultra-Plush Tassel Bookmark that you can make yourself. Best yet, this cozy project takes only a few minutes and looks like you purchased it at a sophisticated boutique. Check out my easy step-by-step tutorial.

You can actually make up to five bookmarks (that's five gifts!) using the same color scheme and pattern for less than $10. All you have to do is carefully measure and cut your scrapbook paper accordingly. In other words, don’t draw your rectangle on the center of paper. Work from the outside of the paper inward to make sure you have enough extra paper for the other bookmarks as well.

Here’s how you do it:

craft materialsMaterials:

  • Yarn
  • 5” x 3” scrap piece of cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Hole puncher
  • Glue stick
  • 2 patterns of scrapbook paper. Make sure one of the pieces is heavy.

step 1 DIY bookmarkStep 1: Cut a 10” piece of yarn and lay it across your piece of cardboard. Then lay the end of your skein of yarn across the top of the other piece of yarn. It should be a “t” shape.

step 2 DIY bookmarkStep 2: Wrap your yarn around the piece of cardboard. If you want a thinner tassel, wrap it less times. The more times you wrap the yarn, the thicker your tassel. I personally love the thick tassel. It looks and feels so luxurious.

step 3 DIY bookmarkStep 3: Once you get your tassel as thick as you prefer, take the ends of the first string and tie them together so there is a knot at the top of the cardboard.

step 4 DIY bookmarkStep 4: Cut yarn at the bottom of the cardboard. Trim the tassel in case there are any uneven pieces.

step 5 DIY bookmarkStep 5: Lay a piece of string under the top part of your tassel. Then knot it and cut off the ends.

step 6 DIY bookmarkStep 6: Measure and draw a 2.5” x 7” rectangle on the back of both your scrapbook papers.

step 7 DIY bookmarkStep 7: Cut out the rectangles.

step 8 DIY bookmarkStep 8: Glue two of the rectangles together.

step 9 DIY bookmarkStep 9: Punch a hole 3/4” from the top of the bookmark.

step 10 DIY bookmarkStep 10: Thread one end of the string at the top of the tassel into the punched hole of the bookmark.

step 11 DIY bookmarkStep 11: Take the other end of the string and thread it through the other side of the bookmark’s punched hole.

step 12 DIY bookmarkStep 12: Tie the two yarn ends together and trim any excess.

All done!
