  • Welcome!

    1

The first thing you notice when you enter this home? Could be how light and airy it feels. Could be how beautifully the dining room and living room complement each other. Or maybe it is the sharp yet warm design details? Let's break it down together!

  • Living Room Before

    2

The living room as a blank space sure lacks the character. It's got a nice window but it's otherwise a box. The new farm-house style Allen & Roth Wintonburg Bronze Chandelier ($119, lowes.com) and the dark-stained hardwood floors begin to set the stage.

  • New Board & Batten Paneling

    3

To add visual interest and to anchor the room, board and batten paneling was added to the back living room wall -- a genius idea and easy, too. It's just cut and primed 1" x 4" boards. Definitely stealing this one!

  • Living Room After

    4

So many great ideas here! First, the clean, airy neutral palette plays dark details like the fabulous Allen & Roth Oil Rubbed Bronze Beveled Round French Wall Mirror ($49.98, lowes.com) off of crisp white walls for a modern feel. Also love the mix of textures: the jute rug and painted basket (great DIY!), along with wood, leather, glass and metal, give the room a sophisticated, layered feel.

  • Stylish Corner

    5

Now this is how to make the most of a corner. Thanks to this leather chair and floor lamp, it's a cozy place to curl up with a book.

  • Gallery Wall

    6

Blank walls can be intimidating, but they are also opportunities to showcase images that have personal meaning. To create your gallery wall, keep it neat and cohesive. Choose frames with the same color matting and frame -- in this case a dark wood with white matting. Be sure to hang images with consistent spacing, about 2-3" apart.

  • Style Your Coffee Table

    7

Your coffee table is like a blank canvas waiting for you to add character to the room. This table is styled with candles on top (great for creating mood lighting), and interesting accessories below that once again play on textures and surfaces.

  • Natural Light

    8

Part of the magic in this room is the natural light that streams through the picture window. They kept window coverings light -- in this case using light-colored semi-sheer drapery panels that allow light to filter in while still providing warmth and privacy.

  • The Dining Room

    9

One look at the adjacent dining room and you see some of the same design strategies used in the living room working wonders here, too: the same colors, natural light, creative wall displays, and great mix of materials and textures.

  • Dining Room Before

    10

It's another blank box with a pretty picture window. What's next?

  • Open Shelves

    11

The living room got custom paneling to set off its decor, and the dining room has a wall of custom open shelves to achieve the same goal. The dark wood -- created by staining 2" x 10"s -- contrasts against the light wall for visual punch, and the displays are thoughtful and charming -- a great way to store and show off pieces.

  • Plates as Art

    12

Like the photo gallery installed in the living room, this creative use of plates takes the dining room wall somewhere special. It's beautiful, it's full of nostalgia, and it looks so pretty!

  • Bring on the Bling

    13

One of the highlights of the dining room is the gorgeous Allen & Roth Eberline Bronze Chandelier ($250, lowes.com) with crystal drops. It's delicate but still makes a big splash, giving the rustic style of the room some sparkle!

  • Artful Styling

    14

Part of what makes this dining room so enticing is gorgeous table display. Again, the mix of materials gives the table character and texture: The wooden bowl with wheat and artichokes flow into the sparkle of the stacked plates, cups, and flatware, and there is a nice mix of sizes and heights among the objects, too. The same technique was used to style the shelves.
