The 10 Happiest & Least Happy States in America: Is Yours on the List? (PHOTOS)

Utah happiest state
How happy are you and your neighbors? Do you see your home state as a place offering a great quality of life when it comes to your emotional well-being? Do you enjoy a satisfying career? After work or on weekends, do you find plenty of community and recreational activities to keep you and your family busy and fit?

WalletHub recently ranked the 50 states, and included the District of Columbia for good measure, from the happiest to least happy places to live.

It's no surprise that the states where residents spent more time participating in sports and volunteering and less time at work were among the places ranked the "happiest."

Check out our slideshow and then tell us: What do you think is the single biggest factor when it comes to overall happiness?

3#3 Happiest: North Dakota

Boasting the highest income growth potential in the country, it turns out life in the Badlands is actually pretty good. This state has the second lowest divorce rate (#1 is Utah -- again).

4#4 Happiest: Colorado

Colorado ranked third highest when it came to residents' sports participation. Keeping active may explain why the state also has the lowest prevalence of overweight or obese residents.

5#5 Happiest: Nebraska

Residents are pretty happy in America's Heartland. Could it be because they're putting in the second lowest median weekly hours worked? Nebraska came in just behind Utah and tied with Rhode Island for this distinction.

West Virginia, known for its mountains and stunning scenery, is among the states with the highest prevalence of obesity, inadequate sleep, and sports participation.

7#2 Unhappiest: Alabama

Apparently, life in Sweet Home Alabama isn't so sweet after all, as it came in among the most unhappy states in the country. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina caused major flood damage, with 22 counties declared federal disaster areas.

8#3 Unhappiest: Mississippi

When you picture Mississippi, you think of the charming riverboats and gorgeous magnolia trees -- but apparently those only get you so far. The "crossroads of the south" has one of the highest divorce and obesity rates in the country.

9#4 Unhappiest: Arkansas

Known for its extreme weather, Arkansas sees hail, snow, and thunderstorms, as well as tornadoes, during the course of the year. The state is also among the least safe to live in, according to WalletHub.
