How to Save Money at the Gas Pump

Love It! 13

save money at gas pumpPlanning your end-of-summer getaway? A road trip is likely in order.

In fact, AAA reports 34.1 million Americans are expected to take Labor Day trips at least 50 miles away from home during the upcoming holiday. That’s up 4.2 percent over last year.

But before you gas up, you should know that not all fueling stations are created equal -- especially when it comes to pricing. Find out who has the cheapest gas by plugging in your zip code at And, as you make your itineraries, be sure to check out AAA’s handy Fuel Cost Calculator to estimate how much you’ll need to budget for gas.

GasPriceWatch also offers tips on spending less for gas:

1. Buy gas when it’s coolest outside -- early in the morning or late at night. "During these times, gasoline is densest. Keep in mind: gas pumps measure volumes of gasoline, not densities of fuel concentration. You are charged according to 'volume of measurement.'"

2. Wednesday mornings are usually the cheapest time to buy. "The prices are usually moved up for weekend by the oil companies and by Wednesday you have had three days of competition setting in among the stations to help drive the price down a few cents."

3. Be an early bird. "Most stations generally raise or lower their prices in the morning -- around 10 a.m. Expect a rise to occur on Thursday morning."

Do you have any tips for saving money on gas?

I normally buy Costco gas since it is $.20 cheaper than the surrounding gas stations. Also, I shop at Von's and I rack up gas rewards points. For each point I save $.10/gallon. So if I have 3 or more I hit up the Von's gas station. The best is when I have 10 gas rewards and I save a full dollar per gallon!!! I'm a saver in every way!

I've heard that the temperature outside doesn't really matter since gas tanks are under ground where it stays cool all the time anyway.

Yes, I do have a very helpful tip!! Although it takes a little longer to pump, you should always pump your gasoline as SLOW as possible. The faster you pump the more your gasoline vaporizes inside of your gas tank. When you pump as slow as possible, you will definitely find yourself saving some money on a full tank or stretching your $20 further than it usually goes. :)

A local grocery store chain had partnered with Mobile Gas Stations here in the Chicago area, and when you shop you gain points which turn into cents off at the pump. What makes it better is Mobile is generally cheapest by us anyways.

keep your tires inflated properly and your oil changed regularly - stick to the speed limits on highways  - draft transport trucks (while still staying back just enough so that they can see you so it's safe!! - don't get gas at the first gas station on the cutoff from highways, go into town, there can be a big difference in prices - shut the air conditioner off - buy regular, not high test as the extra ethanol can cause more issues with your engine as the car gets older and if driving a car more than 10 years old never use the high test - balance the weight when packing, try to get the heaviest stuff centered if possible - sign up for a points card from one of the major cross country providers - don't leave the vehicle running if you are stopping for more than couple minutes - take right hand turns whenever possible.  Or cheapest yet - do a staycation and don't drive!  LOL
