Major Pet Food Recall Issued -- What You Need to Know to Protect You & Your Pet

dog foodCheck your cat and dog food bowls, a major pet food recall has been announced. While we're used to hearing about recalls in the human food arena, this one could make your pooch or kitty sick with Salmonella.

Not only that, if you or your kids touch their food or a surface on which it's been, you too can contract Salmonella. If your pet contracts Salmonella, they can also infect other animals or humans. So this is definitely one you need to know about if you have or are around pets. Here's the scoop.

According to the FDA, the recall comes from Nebraska-based Natura Pet Products. The company is voluntarily recalling batches of its dry pet food because it could possibly be contaminated. There have been no incidents of sickness reported as of yet, but signs to watch for in animals include many of the same symptoms that occur in humans -- lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. If your pet has consumed one of the recalled products and displays any of these symptoms, see your veterinarian. Of course, see your doctor if you do as well.

Affected products include the following brands with expiration dates prior to 6-10-2014: Innova dry dog and cat food and biscuits/bars/treats; EVO dry dog, cat and ferret food and biscuits/bars/treats; California Natural dry dog and cat foods and biscuits/bars/treats;
Healthwise dry dog and cat foods; Karma dry dog foods; and Mother Nature biscuits/bars/treats.

People who have purchased the products are advised to dispose of them. To get a refund or replacement, call Natura at 1-800-224-6123, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Do you have any of these products?
