Major Pet Food Recall Issued -- What You Need to Know to Protect You & Your Pet

dog foodCheck your cat and dog food bowls, a major pet food recall has been announced. While we're used to hearing about recalls in the human food arena, this one could make your pooch or kitty sick with Salmonella.

Not only that, if you or your kids touch their food or a surface on which it's been, you too can contract Salmonella. If your pet contracts Salmonella, they can also infect other animals or humans. So this is definitely one you need to know about if you have or are around pets. Here's the scoop.

According to the FDA, the recall comes from Nebraska-based Natura Pet Products. The company is voluntarily recalling batches of its dry pet food because it could possibly be contaminated. There have been no incidents of sickness reported as of yet, but signs to watch for in animals include many of the same symptoms that occur in humans -- lethargy, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. If your pet has consumed one of the recalled products and displays any of these symptoms, see your veterinarian. Of course, see your doctor if you do as well.

Affected products include the following brands with expiration dates prior to 6-10-2014: Innova dry dog and cat food and biscuits/bars/treats; EVO dry dog, cat and ferret food and biscuits/bars/treats; California Natural dry dog and cat foods and biscuits/bars/treats;
Healthwise dry dog and cat foods; Karma dry dog foods; and Mother Nature biscuits/bars/treats.

People who have purchased the products are advised to dispose of them. To get a refund or replacement, call Natura at 1-800-224-6123, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.

Do you have any of these products?

I use Evo dry cat food and Innova dry puppy food and this happened a couple months ago as well. I was told that they were bought by a bigger company and maybe that has something to do with it. It's getting frustrating.

everyone should switch to the Kirkland dog food(Costco). The one in the purplish/pink bag. It gets a 110 A+ on the dog food grade. Please read the ingredients in your dogs food. Here in OH, a 40lb bag is $26.87

This is the second time in a couple of months period. Now, I have a 6.6 lb. bag, but it still falls in the new date period. I don't think I kept my receipt again. Didn't dream this would happen again. I guess I should just quit buying this brand.

I feed my dog Nutrish (Rachael Ray) First she feeds this to her own beloved dog and then every cent that is made from the sale goes to shelters and rescues.

This gets me angry about what has become of Innova. Since this good company was bought out by Palmolive, I believe, there have been a few recalls. This was a food I thought I could trust for my cats and it is really a terrible shame what can happen to a good company when a corporation takes it over like this... really shameful.
