I Refuse to Hang Pictures on My Walls Because of One Crazy Fear

Say What!? 25

dining roomEvery time I go into one of my friends' houses, I'm immediately overwhelmed with feelings of envy because of how perfectly decorated each and every room is, complete with cute little knick-knacks, beautiful window coverings, and of course, various pictures and pieces of art on every single wall.

You see, I refuse to hang pictures on the walls in my own house or do any other major kind of decorating, not because I don't have the time or energy (though that's partially true too), but because I firmly believe that hanging pictures on the walls is bad luck.

No, I'm not a complete nut job, I swear. (At least hear me out before you declare me to be clinically insane.)

I'm 35 years old, and I've never lived in the same house for more than six consecutive years. And since I come from a family of movers and shakers, we have a running joke that we tend to stick by whenever one of us moves into a new pad. Never hang anything on the walls, because the minute you do, it'll be time to pack up and move again.

And as funny as it sounds, it's true. Every time I've ever felt settled enough to hang anything on the walls or do some other form of decorating, we've relocated shortly afterwards.

On March 1, we will have lived in our current house for guess how long? Yep, exactly six years. And although there's absolutely no indication that we'll be moving anywhere anytime soon -- there's no way in hell I'm about to tempt fate by getting comfortable and adorning my walls with anything.

Because I know the minute I do, something will happen and it will be time to take the pictures off the walls and move.

And as much as I love moving (yes, I really do) because I adore starting fresh and exploring new places and figuring out all the cool things to do and see there, at this point in time, I'm just not up for the physical part of the move. (If you saw the wreck that is my basement, you'd understand.)

So for now, there will be no pictures on my walls in the near future, if ever.

(We'll see, maybe I'll break down and put them up in my next house.)

How long did it take you to hang things on your walls after moving into your home?

I understand this, I really do, because we moved a lot when I was a kid... a whole lot.  My poor sisters went to different high schools each of the four years. Thankfully we settled for a while and I managed to stay in the same high school all four years.

But, I took a completely opposite approach.  As soon as it was determined what corner of which room in the house was to be mine, I started putting up my pictures, posters and putting out my favorite toys and dolls.  The space was constantly changing but the pictures, posters and toys were my continuity from place to place.

I actually understand where you are coming from. In the last 5 years, I have moved 5 times. We have had bad luck with rentals. And each time, it was right after we decorated with pictures. We were buying a great house from my husbands aunt. I felt secure enough to hang pictures. Not even a month later, they they told us they wanted us out because their child wanted to live there. We had put new carpet and painted everything. The rental we are in now is horrible. My sister in law actually told me to hang pictures do we could move. Lol. We are about to put a down payment on our first home. Maybe I will hang up pics then.

I'm with you! That's why tabletop frames appeal to me. Just a few in the living room will do. Although, I don't currently have any up. Oh, well. I've got lots on the fridge! :)

That's so stupid.

Weird. Very weird. I couldn't live in an undecorated house. I get depressed without art & photos & decor on the walls. Feels like a cell or something.

Oh my goodness!!! I do this and yet have never put enough thought in it to come to this conclusion! I've moved almost once a year for the past 15 years (I'm married to a real winner). Everything I start getting attached to a place, my husband decides its time to move on. I done even put anything up anymore. We've been in my current home for 8 months and everything is still sitting around in boxes. I figure we have another 4 months here..tops. I hate it so badly and want a home.

This is strange. Some therapists visits may help.

This isn't strange at all. The longest place ive ever lived was for 6 years. The home I'm in currently I've been in for nearly 5 years, and there's nary a wall hanging in sight. What's the point when you're just gonna take it down shortly after putting it up?

Live moved 7 times in the 15 years I've been married. I've hung stuff on the walls the second I moved in. Even my college rooms had stuff on the walls. Empty walls make me feel cold and lonely,
