5 Tropical Getaways That Are Cheaper Than You Think

Hot List 35

CancunCan I get a show of hands on who would absolutely love to take a tropical getaway right now to escape the winter chill in the air? I think it's safe to say that each and every one of us could use a vacation in a place that's warm, breathtakingly beautiful, and most important -- easy on our wallets.

Unfortunately, when most of us think "tropical," we immediately start seeing dollar signs in our heads. A lot of exotic destinations are so expensive that we can really only afford to go there in our wildest dreams. But believe it or not, there are a few tropical getaways you can take that won't break your bank, and will still leave you relaxed and rejuvenated.

Here are five cheap tropical destinations where you'll get a lot of bang for your buck without sacrificing that beachy, island ambiance.

1. Cancun -- Mexico has always been pretty economical, but these days some of the deals out there are nothing short of incredible. With a myriad of all-inclusive resorts in Cancun to accommodate all budgets, the perfect vacation is well within your reach. And if you do venture off resort property, the exchange rate in Mexico is pretty good right now, at 1 USD to 12.65 pesos.

2. Jamaica -- Jamaica also boasts several all-inclusive resorts, but in addition to beautiful beaches, the Caribbean island also offers a whole host of activities for outdoor enthusiasts, including hiking, ziplining, and even cliff diving, if you dare. Another plus? The current exchange rate is killer, with 1 USD being equal to 92.63 Jamaican dollars.

3. Dominican Republic -- The Dominican is quickly becoming the place to escape to, and again, it's all-inclusive, newer resorts are a major lure for tourists. The beaches here are supposedly unparalleled, from everyone I've talked to.

4. Puerto Rico -- If you don't want to deal with a long flight or if you're looking for a quick getaway, Puerto Rico is a hop, skip, and a jump from the U.S. From lavish resorts to budget inns, San Juan offers something to fit everyone's taste. Another perk of traveling to Puerto Rico is that U.S. currency is used, so you don't have to exchange your cash.

5. Aruba -- This one may surprise you, as it certainly threw me for a loop. Aruba may be a bit further down in the Caribbean, which you'd think would make it a pricier place to visit. As it turns out, there are several budget-friendly resorts and hotels on the island. Currently, the U.S. exchange rate to Aruba's currency, Florin, is pretty lateral, at 1 USD to 1.79 Florin.

Have you visited any other surprisingly cheap tropical locations?

I've been to Cancun and Puerto Rico (a million years ago). Unfortunately, NONE of this are affordable for us right now. (paying off debts--Dave Ramsey's voice in my head all the damn time!!)

We went to Trinidad & Tobago years ago (before DH and I were married). Everything is cheap once you get there, but GETTING THERE--holy cow! Well worth it, though!!! :)
