5 Dangerous Holiday Traditions & How to Stop Them From Ruining Your Fun

by Julie Ryan Evans on December 6, 2012 at 11:04 AM

tree'Tis the season for fun, festivities, and all sorts of merry fa la la-ing. There are presents to wrap, trees to adorn, parties to attend, and meals to make. As the song says, "It's the hap-happiest season of all" ... until someone ends up in the emergency room.

Amidst all the merriment lurk plenty of holiday hazards, and decking those halls can be flat-out dangerous. Some of the traditions we hold dear are also rife with potential risks that are easy to forget about as we get caught up in the fun. Here are five of the most dangerous holiday traditions.

1. Christmas Lights and Candles

It's all lovely and sparkly until your house goes up in flames. Make sure you take care of that tree and never use old or frayed lights. Check out this video from the CPSC that gives some other good tips.

2. Deep Frying a Turkey

Lots of people milling about plus a huge vat of boiling oil is just an accident waiting to happen. Make sure the frying happens in an out-of-the-way location, and that the cook takes plenty of precautions.

3. Eggnog and Other Libations

Between raising a toast to a good time and being driven to drink by the stress and crazy relatives, the booze typically flows at this time of year. Just make sure it doesn't flow very hard (if at all) if you're driving, and know your limits even if you're not.

4. Decorating Your House

Sure, everyone likes to go a little Clark Griswold putting up wreaths, lights, and inflatable everything, but those ladders can be dangerous. People have died while doing so, so take every precaution when climbing on ladders and such, or hire someone to do it for you.

5. Toys

All good girls and boys deserve toys, but not all of them are safe. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group has released its 27th Annual Trouble in Toyland survey that is definitely worth making sure Santa reviews before the presents are put under the tree.

What dangerous holiday traditions would you add to the list?

    Yikes, that video is scary!

Another other dangerous holiday tradition is over spending.  It can be pretty stressful financially to get the bills in January!
