American Flag Doormats & 6 More Unpatriotic Decorations That Should Be Taken Down

by Jeanne Sager on May 29, 2012 at 2:16 PM

American flag
Don't be this guy
There's something about the summer months that pushes pride in your country to a whole other level. From Memorial Day to Flag Day to July 4 and on and on, there is red, white, and blue as far as the eye can see. But the little flap over an American flag doormat this past weekend is a good reminder that even patriotism can be a taken a wee bit too far by eager homeowners.

An angry veteran alleged that Lowe's stores were selling doormats with flags on them, a blatant suggestion that people wipe their feet on Old Glory. Snopes has cleared the home improvement giant, but found other sellers who were using the nation's symbol on their doormats. Eww!

And if you think that's bad, wait until you get a load of the other disrespectful decor I found.

The flag has been used by American retailers in some truly bizarre ways. I'm talking car seat covers (so you can sit on the flag and spill fast food on it, fart on it ... come on, on long car trips, everyone does it) and dining mats that are made to be spilled on.

I'm sure most of the people who buy these things are just well-meaning Americans caught up in flag fervor. But do me a favor, will you? After you've perused these awful interpretations of patriotism, think carefully about how you want to use red, white, and blue in your home.

What sort of Americana have you seen that takes the pride thing far?

Some people just love the flag, I don't think it's unpatriotic at all.

Okay, I understand the doormat, rug, and seat covers. But I dont see anything wrong with the other stuff. It is just decor, people love the flag. I dont think these people are spending their money on this stuff because they want to "disrespect America".
Seriously, is there nothing more productive to bitch about?

REALLY? When will this country get its politically correct STICK out of its butt? It's not like people are taking actual U.S. government FLAGS and making these things from them. Can't we just be patriotic and be PROUD of our country? Yeesh!

And this is officialy the worst artical I have ever read on this site. Its Decor its not like the people who buy this stuff are going to go have a flag burning party. Now that would truly be disrespectful.

lol no one who would buy these things woud do so to be disrespectful and techically the seat covers don't have flags on them they just use flag colors arranged incorrectly. I get that they are in poor tast but no one can fix that.

I agree with the above, minus RhondVeggie's comment. It's DECOR, come on. Really? I don't find any of this disrespectful. But, what I do find funny is how the Chinese New Year parade says "America", but somehow our flag is not okay to use as decor in showing pride in our country. What a fucking joke.

At least put a notice in the title line like you do with videos... (slideshow)... so we know NOT TO OPEN THESE ARTICLES.

Seems like every day, there are plenty of people on here complaining that the slideshows don't work, and yet, the Stir continues to put the infernal things up.

for many of your readers, THEY DO NOT WORK. Having the page reload itself to view each and every picture is supremely annoying and a huge waste of time.

I'd love to be part of the conversation, but I can't, because I won't even bother with the slideshows.
