Heroic Pit Bull Saves Unconscious Owner From Train -- But Pays a Price (VIDEO)

pit bull lillyOkay, I'm going to stop crying now. I really am. At least long enough to tell you about this amazing pit bull who ... I'm getting verklempt! Talk amongst yourselves!

Seriously, this story breaks my heart because, as I started to say, it's about an amazing pit bull, and I have an amazing pit bull (she's actually half pit, half Eskimo) and there are SO many amazing pit bulls out there but the poor maligned animals continue to get such a bad rap.

How amazing is this pit bull? So amazing that she saved her owner's life -- by pulling her unconscious body from the path of an oncoming freight train after she passed out on the train tracks.

Lilly started out as a rescue dog, and she ended up rescuing her owner. Because that's what pit bulls are like!! Loyal and brave and sweet!

Even though poor Lilly paid a price for her heroic deed ...

Lilly suffered internal injuries and sadly needed to have her right front leg amputated ... but doctors think she will walk again.

I'm sure Lilly's owner, 54-year-old Christine Spain, is heartbroken. Her son David, a Boston police officer, gave Lilly to his mom as a therapy dog (she was battling alcoholism and depression).

Christine had been doing much better until a family tragedy last week. It was because of her related relapse that she passed out on the train tracks.

"We saved Lilly, and Lilly saved my mom's life," said David.

"My hope is that this story is going to get out and show what pit bulls are truly about. I hope by Lilly going through this, it's going to get other dogs homes."

Here's hoping, David!

Does this story break your heart? Do you know an amazing pit bull?

To reassure: I worked as a vet tech for several years, and witnessed several amputations, and the results of amputations. Dogs do AMAZINGLY well on only three legs. It is surprising how quickly they recover and strengthen those other three legs, and it's almost like they never had that fourth leg.

This is a wonderful story - much needed to combat the Pit Bull Hate out there. Prayers for this whole family.

So sweet! My cousin rehabs abused pit bulls and it really is amazing how loyal and sweet they are by nature, even after years of torment!

Thanks for sharing! We have an amazing American Staffordshire Terrier (almost exactly like a pit bull for those not in the know). We know what amazing creatures these dogs are and love when they get to shine.

Thank you for sharing this story :) its good to see someone post something about pit bulls that isn't full of fear mongering and ignorance about the breed

This drunk idiot passed on on the train tracks and almost killed this innocent dog. That's about all I got from this story.

drunk idiot? She is a recovering alcoholic who relapsed due to a family tragedy. Therapy dogs are used to rehabilitate everything from recovering addicts to cancer patients to the elderly.......this womans issues had nothing to do with the fact that Lily was doing her job as a dog-protecting her owner. I sure hope you don't have any issues in life that you relapse from that someone has to save you.........because with that attitude they probably won't.
