The 5 Hottest Home Accessories for Fall

fall foliage picLook around your house or apartment right now. Does it look tired, old, dated? Or are you just sick of the sight of that candleholder you've had since college? Luckily, one of the easiest ways to remake your space for fall is through accessories ... those accent pieces that add personality to your home, just like a cute scarf or cool ring does for your outfit.

New home accessories are fun to shop for because you can find that perfect piece for you at all price points, no matter what your style. Here are five looks to watch for:

1) Floor poufs. These tiny little seats, kind of like footstools but fancier, are all over the place this fall. You can use them to enhance another design theme or blend with your current decor, but they actually serve a purpose too. Think of them as a rest for your tired feet after a long day, or a perch for a child, or a snack tray holder when you're entertaining.

2) Best of the 1970s. For those of us who grew up then, this trend could trigger shudders of horror at memories of macrame overkill and too many "early American" motifs. But believe it or not, there were some good home decor fads flourishing too. You could, for example, toss one of those granny-square afghans over your couch, or spruce up your living room with a Danish Modern accent chair or a simple wooden lamp.

3) Ethnic patterns. These are supposed to give the impression of souvenirs picked up on your travels around the world. Imagine a Moroccan-style lantern holding a candle on your mantel, or sari-print pillows on the couch. Look for paisley, embroidery, tapestry ... anything that looks like it could come with a story of wild adventures.

4) Bright colors. Even the most soothing, serene, neutral-toned space can benefit from having splashes of color scattered around the room. Think a glass vase in teal or purple (two hot colors this fall), a brightly tinted throw on the couch, or even a cluster of vividly-hued candles on the coffee table.

5) Industrial chic. This look is everywhere this season and is surprisingly versatile. Home accessories that appear to have been repurposed from old machine parts have a unique beauty to them and can even fit into traditional decor. Imagine an old scale used an as accent piece or a vintage metal pitcher filled with flowers; both would look just as nice in a country-style home as a sleek, modern one.
