Weird Vending Machines Offer Family Road Trip Fun

Heather Chaet

vending machinesSchool is wrapping up soon, everyone is making plans for the annual family vacation. Hop in the car, head to Six Flags or Lake Michigan or Disney World. Whether you're on the road for a few hours or a few days, you're bound to hit a road stop. Road stop means vending machines. Vending machines means candy ... or gold doubloons.

Across the world, vending machines are offering up some crazpants things you can get in a vending machine. In Nanjing, China, you can get live hairy crabs in certain machines, original artwork can be purchased in Las Vegas vending machines, and, yes, over in Abu Dhabi, insert some moolah and grab some gold doubloons.

Puts a whole new spin on the road trip, eh?

Overseas, they are much more imaginative, but here in the U.S., we aren't too far behind. Visiting Los Angeles and forgot your swimsuit? You can grab one from a vending machine in swanky hotel lobbies (and no three-way dressing room mirrors!). Heading to do some fishing? Buy your bait -- night-crawlers or crayfish -- without ever talking to a salesperson.

I have to say, these new vending machines are a little creepy to me, very futuristic with this automation, a tad Matrix-y. Sure, grabbing a Twix bar and a Diet Coke is one thing, but buying a Ioaf of bread and artwork is something else.

Makes me ponder what I would want in a vending machine. Alas, an extra hour in the day is rather impossible, so I guess I'll have to settle for a machine that gives me George Clooney with a push of a button. Now only if I can get my dang wrinkled bill to not be spit out, I'll be a happy mama.

What's your favorite thing to get from a vending machine?
