15 Signs Your House Is Haunted

haunted house crows

Awhile back when I posted about the real, fabled-to-be-haunted Amityville Horror house being for sale and asked readers if they would buy it, mommyzgirlz3 left a comment that said:

"Heck yeah, my kids would love it. They are so into hauntings and such. The house we live in now is haunted, but they are friendly. They move stuff like the cell phones and toys and they open and shut the doors. That's about it and my kids love it."

That's about it? Love it? What??? Um, scary! Get ... out ... of the house!

The idea of haunted houses and hauntings scares the heck out of me, and I think I'd move the second I suspected a paranormal visitor, friendly or not, lurking or floating around my home. If you know what to look for in a haunted house, you can figure out pretty quickly if something creepy is going on. We've compiled a list of ways you can tell if your house is haunted or not.

But first, let's find out a little more from mommyzgirlz3 about her experience with hauntings.

I just had to find out more from mommyzgirlz3 about her hauntings. Here's what she had to say:

"Honestly all the houses up here are noted to be haunted in some way."

Get ... out ... of the state ... now!

"Growing up here the apartment we lived in. I remember being in bed real sick. My mother was not the most motherly person, so I lay in my bed sick to my stomach and not feeling like myself. I remember a cool breeze coming into my room, and I knew it was super hot outside and the window was not open. I heard a giggle real soft and light, and then when I looked into the corner of my bedroom, I saw a shadow about three feet tall almost transparent. It stayed in the corner for a few more minutes then just simply dissolved.

"In the house we are in now, up here in the same complex I grew up in, it's simple things. Cool breezes that pass instantly. Small things getting moved. Just a little bit ago I was downstairs, and I heard a loud thump in the bedroom above me. One of my child's toys had fallen on the floor. I just walked in and put it back and left and felt the faint draft of cool air..."

Oh dear, this scares me. So glad she is okay with it.

Now that you've heard a real account from one mom, consider this other evidence that probably means your house is haunted.

15 Signs Your House Is Haunted

  1. You hear children whispering, singing or chanting
  2. You hear other voices moaning or crying
  3. There are unexplained noises from music, screams, or rattling chains to partying, knocking, or a baby crying
  4. You hear footsteps
  5. Lights turn off and on
  6. Objects move or drop without prompting
  7. Inanimate objects start moving, like a rocking chair
  8. You experience sudden drops in temperature
  9. You detect unexplained lingering smells like an unfamiliar perfume or cigar smoke
  10. Any of the above coincide with the addition of an old piece of furniture, often with a drawer or door that won't close
  11. Pets start acting strangely or growling or howling at unseen objects
  12. Slime appears on the furniture
  13. You feel another presence even when you are alone
  14. Apparitions appear in photos you take
  15. You see apparitions

{{{Shudder}}} I'm scared now.

Have you ever witnessed a haunting or other supernatural event?

A couple of years ago, my family moved into a house where a mean old man died of lung cancer. He would open the garage door at three in the morning, turn on the water from the fridge while everyone was sleeping so we had a big mess to clean in the morning, slammed doors in our faces, threw things from the cuppboards when we opened them, and taunted the dogs. And every time my sister got in the shower she had the feeling something was watching her. At one point she got out of the shower and had really bad scratch marks down her back.

The house also had a problem with spiders and I'd wake up with them crawling on me. And my cats would hiss and growl at nothing.

We only lived there for six months.

My husband thinks our house is haunted. He says he has seen a ghost of a  small girl in our daughters bedroom and my dad who passed away 10 years ago in our house. He also thinks his mom, who passed away 12 years ago is haunting our stereo system.

I am a non-beliver in the paranormal. I say everything has an explination. The stereo has wiring problems, since I have unpluged it from the outlet we have not had any problems with it. As for my husband seeing the "ghosts" of a small girl and my dad, I say he is just hallucinating.

I have lived in a few haunted houses in my life. The last one was my grandmas house. We heard footsteps on the stairs, I felt a presence and heard things MANY times. My radio turned on by itself. Had someone knock on my bedroom door and I said come in, no one came in and when the door was opened no one was there. In a different house as a child I saw something white and glowing on a dark blue chair in a dark room. Seen someone come in the room out of the corner of my eye and when I looked no one was there.

OUr house is very haunted. I must say some of your list is funny. Ghost can I guess some slime but they do drop other things on you way grosser lol. We have to keep the stove unplugged because of one of the ghost. Must have been a huge smoker I guess in life idk. So many things happen here It would never fit in this small area lol. I will try and hit some highlights lol.

The stove turns itself on. (gas)

stuff moves and disappears for long periods of time then shows up again.

We have a ghost cat as well.

There is an old lady who likes to watch you take a bath. (she is the one that does creep me out. Why watch me take a bath)

also one is a butt grabber. (perv)

Sometimes we will have scratches in odd places with no idea how or why.

and last but not least on ghost loves to put boogers on our cats and in our hair. ( it looks like it at least I did not try and study it to hard)

lol You have to just not freak out when stuff happens.

I have lived in other houses that stuff happened in.

i have seen many paranormal stuff in my house. i was really sick and in my basement watching TV as a child and i looked up and saw green and purple fog in one spot in the roof right above me. i heard a roar, not like an animal or a person, but like a supernatural roar. just before i suddenly fell asleep. i wook up 5 hours later in my bed, my mom had found me walking around down stairs aimlessly with my eyes wide open. My dog Max would NEVER go in the basement after that.

the day before halloween he died. but on Halloween day he was walking with me outside. i was talking to him and petting him. my mom came out and asked me what i was doing and i said (petting max, he came back!) then he was gone.

throughout the years my moms light would ALWAYS come on by itself. one day she saw max, a year after he had died in my side porch. he stood up, smiled at her, wagged his tail once, then vanished. she didnt tell me that until recntly since i had a lot of trouble accepting max was gone.

we tore up the rug a few years ago to find a massive dried up blood stain under the carpet. When we tried to wash it off the lights went out. i ran upstairs, terrified, and saw the same purple again. after the lights came on it vanished. so did the blood. i heard a bark that sounded like Max and knew he had scared it away.

many more supernatural events have happened to me before. if you want to here more feel free to email me! :) thanks.

My husband is sure that our house is haunted, but not by anything bad.  One of our dogs will stare at spot in the room and move her head like she is following something around the room that we can't see.  She also has a weird fear of our entry and will either not walk through it or will run really fast.  He doesn't think its bad because our other dog doesn't seem to notice anything and neither growl or bark.

Hostile ghost: banging, scratches (on furniture, doors, or yourself), smoke, growls, your pet growls at an empty space or is scared of one, and items being thrown at you, sometimes voices that tell you to leave. If ever you think there is an evil spirit in your home, i would suggest blessing it. I am not even remotely religious and i know that praying, crosses, and blessings do work. Also, if there is an evil spirit trying to get inside your home, just will it away, don't be afraid, they feed off of fear, turn on the lights, and it'll leave. Have a cross through all of this too. Or a special crystal. It doesn't even look like a crystal but works like a cross. Most likely though most spirits you run into will be friendly. I am fourteen years old and i know more about ghosts than most people will in a lifetime, not through stupid shows, not through random google searches, through experience, with poltergeists, demons, dead family members and friends, and living family members and friends
