Google Earth Keeps Naughty Homeowners in Check

by Jeanne Sager on September 10, 2010 at 1:10 PM

poolThink you can skip a building permit if your fence is high enough to hide something? Think again.

The almighty Google is being used by town code enforcement officers to nab naughty builders.

One shot on Google Earth could cost you big time.

Any wonder it's becoming controversial?

In fact, one town that's been using the aerial images to cite property owners who put in pools without permission has backed off on the practice. The town council in Riverhead, New York, voted to stop doing so because of complaints that they're moving into Big Brother territory.

Their new rule: a violation can't be ordered unless the pool can be seen from the public area.

So maybe you don't need a building permit after all? Heck, let's throw zoning out the window entirely.

The practice sound ingenious to me -- but then, I tend to check with local zoning officials before I build something. And I'm extremely leery of unsafe pools.

I'm wary of Big Brother taking over our lives, but if the satellite photos already exist and they're taken without violating the law ... who are we to argue?

As it stands now, the only thing that keeps code enforcement officers from taking to the skies to check on backyards is finance -- they're legally allowed to fly above us. And if you aren't committing a crime, what are you so worried about?

Is this too Big Brother-ish for you?

It's not that MOST people are doing something ILLEGAL! It's a PRIVACY issue. There is just too much spying going on and it's getting out of hand. Cameras everywhere, planes flying, over, illegal surveillance by the government, and the more liberties these people take with us as long as people like you advocate remaining silent on such issues. What next?! Cameras placed in front of the men's urinals, in the ladies rest rooms, behind mirrors in department stores dressing rooms, in elevators, stairwells, inside the class rooms and bathrooms and locker rooms at schools? Once they get started and we accept this without a word, the more they'll push into other areas. Soon we'll be viewed all day long every where we go. In the streets, in the parks, on the way home, going in and coming out of our homes? There soon will be no end to the interference, the spying, listening and watching, and the invasions of our privacy. Help us Lord!

Google earth isn't exactly keen on up to date satellite imagery--some of those shots are several years old--so unless Google has access to up to the minute real time satellite imagery then google earth isn't the coolest, hippest thing in town now is it?

We are becoming eager to embrace little bits of government intrusion. The spycrats want you to give up your privacy. We are forced to tell the government all about our finance by April 15th each year. Cameras are looking at us everywhere. The government cameras can even undress us at the airport. The if you not doing anything wrong argument does not cut it. Free people are not watched like suspects. Wake up and see what is coming

...Too many government busy bodies with too much time on their hands equals trouble. ...If you can't see it from the street and in the privacy of your own domain is does not exist.

The "Big Brother" issue is more serious than most give it credit for. Has even one right that has been given up in this country EVER been won back? Not that I know of. Be very careful of having your rights chipped away at.

Yes, it is too Big Brother-ish for me because that is how it starts. People often use this excuse when taking away rights and freedoms. "Hey, if you're not doing anything wrong you got nothing to worry about." We NO, that is not how this works. You are entitles to privacy and authorities need warrants before they search your premises, etc. Americans have been giving away their freedoms at an insane rate. Our founding fathers are rolling over in their graves. Big Government may be as big of an enemy to our way of life as the terrorists. Don't let the fear control you. Fight for freedom!
