There's no doubt homemade food is the bomb.
But is your kitchen the home of a time bomb waiting to go off in your stomach?
A new study estimates most American kitchens would never pass muster with health officials.
Hmm, methinks the cat currently lying on my oven would completely agree.
What? I'll kick him off there before I cook.
I might even wipe the fur off the glass before I turn on the burner. Singed cat hair stinks.
The study estimated 61 percent of Americans would get an A or B -- the A is of course the best, so this isn't completely disgusting news. But a full 14 percent would fail completely.
And that should make you terrified of dinner parties for the rest of your life.
I took a look around my kitchen to gauge our hot spots. The cat is a big one, but I jest when I say I "might" wipe the fur. It's one of my major pet peeves, the sort that makes me insist to my husband that we will NEVER have a cat again.
I do wash it. With the eraser block.
The sink itself is another biggie. We pile dirty dishes in there, then we put our strainer in there ... and all that dirty stuff that slipped off now washes over our veggies thanks to the hot water backing up in the sink.
Ick! I am forever fighting with my husband to CLEAN the sink before he puts the strainer in there.
Just a quick wipe-down with the stainless steel cleaner, then a good dousing in hot water to get it all out of there.

I am pretty sure it would be easier to say what isn't a trouble spot. I am sitting here thinking, every time I walk into the kitchen, I clean it. People are forever making messes and spills and not cleaning them up. I will say though, the microwave is pretty gross. I use vinegar once a week to clean it out but people still put things in there that splatter and don't bother to wipe up the splatter when the food comes out.
I think it's a load of crap. I'm sure my kitchen would fail the test. But we've never gotten sick from it. My kids are as healthy as can be.
The floor. It's awful. I hate it. The stove gets a little gross because (obviously) stuff splashs onto it but I wipe it up at LEAST once a day. The counters get wiped daily, the fridge get cleaned out, the sink wiped down every time we wash. No pets.
But the floor man, that floor is so gross.
No, my kitchen would never pass. Then again, I'm not running a restaurant either.
For the record, I'm more concerned that you use the Magic Eraser in the same place you prepare food than I am about your car's fur. ;)
I'd pass, probably get a B though. Damn fridge hides leftovers for weeks lol!! Other than the fridge I try to keep it pretty clean most days. My dirty little secret is I tend to rinse dirty diapers out in the sink :O I have a vinigar/tea tree oil/water spray that I spray down the sink with after every dirty diaper I rinse out though, so I say it's okay LOL!!
and the thing about the magic erasers is just a over hyped up rumor. The reason everyone says they are dangerous is because of formaldehyde being in the ingredients list when really it's only part of a chemical compound (kinda like sodium chloride is really salt. you wouldn't munch on sodium alone but you still eat sodium chloride.) The company that makes them admits that there could be trace amounts of the chemical in the product but you'd find more of the chemical in the air in your house then you would in one of the erasers. They aren't nearly as dangerous as using bleach and they work a billion times better.
@Rana -- the food itself doesn't touch the magic eraser spots :). Only the bottom of the pots. Food that falls on the stovetop gets thrown out (if the dog doesn't get it first!).
I have a dog and his hair sometimes ends up in the kitchen, but as far as dishes and surfaces, I am regularly cleaning and wiping then down.
My floor is the worst. I hate it. I am really hoping that next year is the year we get a new floor and new cabinets and new countertops. I try hard to get my kitchen clean but it does take others helping to keep it that way.
Around the sink....hard water stains/lime/???
