Neighborhood Watch signYou know the saying it takes a village? Well, when it comes to crime prevention at home, whether you live in the city or a suburb, rent or own, or live in a house or an apartment, there's a lot you can do to help stop neighborhood crime on your block.

From Neighborhood Watch groups to gatherings that show a united presence, including National Night Out on August 3, joining forces with your neighbors goes a long way toward deterring crime in your area.

Read on for more neighborhood crime prevention tips.

National Night Out is the perfect excuse to have a block party. Tuesday, August 3, gather your friends and neighbors and participate in the “27th Annual National Night Out” crime/drug prevention event. From 6 to 10 p.m., residents throughout the nation will be locking their doors, turning on their outside lights, and spending the evening outside with neighbors and local police.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. (Who doesn't want that? Besides criminals, that is!)

Being vigilant for one night is good, but you can take it a step further by starting (or joining) your Neighborhood Watch.

5 Reasons to Join (or Start) Neighborhood Watch

  1. Reduce crime on your street/block
  2. Reduce the risk of arson with arson watch
  3. Help stop animal cruelty
  4. Form better relationships with your neighbors/get involved with your community
  5. Get your whole family involved and spend time together while you help fight crime

Do you plan to celebrate National Night Out? Do you belong to a Neighborhood Watch?
