Is Mel Gibson, this week's most hated man in America -- due to the leaked tapes in which he berates his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva in a belligerent, abusive, misogynistic, and racist rant -- planning to move home to Australia?

Today the Daily Telegraph reports Mel Gibson has sold his mansion near New York, put his Malibu, California home (shown to the left via TMZ) on the market, and is planning to return to the land "down under" -- and get this, WITH his ex-wife Robyn.

According to the Telegraph, Gibson sold his mock-Tudor property near New York and known as Old Mill Farm, for $28 million -- but that was $17 million less than the asking price. Is Mel in some kind of hurry? His Malibu home, known as Lavender Hill Farm, is on the market for $17 million.

Apparently friends also report that Gibson has told him he will move to Australia with Robyn, his former wife and mom to his seven older children.

Does this make anyone else shiver?

Earlier this week, Robyn wrote a sworn declaration on behalf of Mel, saying "Mel never engaged in any physical abuse of any kind toward me before, during or after our marriage" and that there was never any domestic violence perpetrated by Mel against any of their children.

Really? He just turned into that vile-spewing monster overnight? Maybe there's been an alien abduction?

Gibson’s rep Alan Nierob denies the rumor and says Gibson is staying in the U.S. Nierob says “there’s no truth" to the Australian escape story. No word on whether there's truly a "Mel and Robyn" reunion in the works.

Do you believe Mel Gibson's off to Australia to beat the heat (and I don't mean the summer heat)? And do you really think Robyn will take him back?
