Today the Whirlpool Corporation issued a dishwasher recall on 1.7 million of its Maytag dishwasher models due to a fire hazard, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

That's a whole lot of dishwashers! And potential fires!

This dishwasher recall involves Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag, and Crosley brands of under-counter or portable plastic tub dishwashers. Maytag has received 135 reports of dishwasher fires, resulting in product and/or property damage and four injury reports.

In a statement issued today, the company said there is a faulty heating element that can short-circuit and ignite. The CPSC urges consumers to immediately stop using the dishwashers and disconnect the power source by pulling the fuse or flipping a circuit-breaker.

Contact Maytag for either a FREE in-home repair or a $75 cash back reimbursement following the purchase of a new Maytag, Jenn-Air, Whirlpool, or KitchenAid dishwasher. Consumers shouldn't return the dishwasher to the retailer where it was purchased, as retailers aren't prepared to take units back.

For additional information, consumers are directed to call 800-675-0535 or visit the Maytag website.

(I hope not, but ...) do you have one of these recalled dishwashers?
