Tell us the story behind Seven Ply:

My mission is to rescue, recycle, and reuse broken skateboards by turning them into a unique piece jewelry. I’m breathing new life into these seven layers and converting this scuffed up boy toy into something beautiful. Saving one skateboard at a time, Seven Ply is "Turning Thrash’n into Fashion." Who doesn’t like going green in style! Each piece is handmade and one of a kind ... accessories with a story.

Photo from Lynn WeilerSeven Ply all started in 2007, the same year that I became a Mom. When my son, Elijah, was born I was on a mission to find something that would allow me to work from home. I had been reconstructing vintage jewelry for years and grew up surrounded by skateboarding.

So it just made sense to combine my knowledge of jewelry design with my love for skateboarding. My husband had the broken skateboards, and my dad had the tools. So I began experimenting. Fast-forward to today and I have a workshop full of my very own power tools. I never imaged how much I would love tools!

How many children do you have?

I have one crazy wild boy! Elijah Hurricane ... I guess I set myself up for craziness with that name! He sure lives up to it. He is a rambunctious 2 1/2-year-old.

How much time do you spend crafting every week?

I spend all my free time cutting, sanding, and sealing broken decks. I work mostly while Elijah is napping and late into the night once he is sound asleep.

How do you make the time to craft while being a parent?

I don’t really know how to answer this question because it’s all I have ever known. I brought a baby home from the hospital and had to make it all work. This explains my son’s awareness to fashion and his unbelievable eye for detail. It’s all he has ever known as well.

Do you have your own craft room or do you share space with your son?


Photo from Lynn WeilerI have my own studio and workshop. Both rooms are off-limits to my son but I daydream of the day that E and I will be able to work together.

He does sometimes like to sit with me and attempt his hand at sanding. Those are usually the days that he decides against a nap. He keeps my life interesting to say the least.

What are your favorite craft blogs and/or shops?

Right now I love, love, love DrCraze. A super-cool husband and wife team that make awesome jewelry out of recycled concrete. I have the sweetest cloud necklace from them that I wear every day!

I really admire Moozle Home and would love to one day get a "Play Tent" for my son!

And last but definitely not least, I have been obsessed with Victor Perez’s recycled skateboard lamps. His designs are well thought out and look so rad!
