I love this clever idea for sprucing up a plain old cork board or bulletin board. Deb from Fresh Nest Design came up with this project and was kind enough to share the instructions. She uses her ruffle cork board to brighten her office and create inspiration boards for her work. Isn't it darling?
Keep reading for full instructions on how to make your own.
Materials List:
- Framed cork board
- 1/2 yard of light flannel fabric
- Scissors, needle, and thread
- Glue gun and glue sticks
- Can of spray paint (optional)
Deb started with a typical cork board -- like this one from Amazon. Then she spray painted it white. You could paint your board to fit your color scheme. Or even leave it natural. Once the board was painted, it was time to construct the ruffle.

Here are the steps:
-Start by cutting the fabric into 1.5″ to 2″ squares.
-Pinch the fabric in the middle of the square and hand-sew it with a few stitches to help it keep its figure.
-String the fabric squares together on the same thread.
-Once you have 3 to 4 squares on the thread, start bunching them and sewing them together and trying to make each one look like a little flower ruffle.
-About 10 to 12 squares later, you'll have a little flower ruffle.

It took 10 little flowers to cover the top of Deb's cork board. Depending on the size of board you're using, you may need more or less. Deb attached the ruffle to the board with a hot glue gun.

This looks like such a fun and easy technique that could be applied to all sorts of items and surfaces. How about adding a felt-square ruffle to a pillow? Or maybe a cardigan? You could use the little felt flowers to embellish a curtain. Or glue them around a frame.
What else? How would you use a ruffle like this?

Cute! Really softens it and makes it look more fun than work-y.
This is really great! I am not into ruffles but this gives me tons of ideas for my board. Like maybe nature stuff, rocks and twigs. Oooo, creative juices going now! LOL!
I love dust collectors...
I love nice and easy ideas like this one
Cute idea! Do it in green and add a few ladybugs or frogs....or even flowers and make it a little garden-y *nod*...that's how I'd do it!
I think you could do two ruffle colors to make it pop just a little bit more... Not sure what else I would do with a ruffle, I'll have to think about it.
We're not really into ruffles, but might go with silk flowers along the border instead.
Oh that's cute......I'm not really into ruffles....I have a boy so I don't have too many uses for ruffles...LOL
That looks nice.
That looks cute. I am not a fan of anything that needs a needle and thread, but it is a great idea for those who are handy like that.
