According to the Boston Herald, the Massachusetts Mass Save Great Appliance Exchange program ran out of its $5.4 million in rebates in less than two hours today.

Many states are pushing cash-for-clunker appliance programs, and Massachusetts' Great Appliance Exchange program opened up this Earth Day, offering $50 to $250 appliance rebates on qualifying appliances including refrigerators, freezers, washers, and dishwashers. Unfortunately, many interested consumers missed the window when the Mass Save website and telephone lines got clogged and all the rebate money got snatched up. The state's $2 million wait list was even maxed within another 30 minutes.

While many consumers missed out on this opportunity, it's nice to see there's a great interest. Programs such as this one help buyers replace older appliances with new energy-efficient ones, and many help consumers properly dispose of their old units too.

Are you looking at a Cash for Appliance Clunkers rebate in your state? What are you hoping to replace?
