This week the Center for Science in the Public Interest announced the 10 foods most likely to carry food-borne illness. Leafy greens—including lettuce and spinach—are the most dangerous. What else made the list?
Before you read this list, please note that the purpose of these findings is NOT to have consumers panic and change their eating habits. Rather, this information is intended to be used to lobby Congress to improve food safety programs and enforcement. Just something to keep in mind.
Nevertheless, this list is a little scary...
- Eggs
- Tuna
- Oysters
- Potatoes
- Cheese
- Ice cream
- Tomatoes
- Sprouts
- Berries
Interesting to note: Many of these "dangerous" foods are healthy foods.
Have you ever had food poisoning? What did you eat that caused it? Any of these foods?

Gosh I eat all of those foods. But thank the Lord I have never had food poisoning. My husband just had it though a few weeks ago. We narrowed what he ate down to either Subway or some leftover rice he ate at a co-workers house.
This makes me so angry! When it makes the government money, it's the best answer, no matter the percentage of danger. When it comes to the 5% or less chance of people seriously getting ill or hurt from viruses that we vaccinate against, they say we should never take the chance, get the vaccine! When it's the same situation with buying food and possibly making their FDA and USDA look like morons, they say it's a small risk that you should take. $$$ It's all about $$$.
I read this original article...it was posted WITH a sister article from a doctor who said this list was out of date and ridiculous.
Although as a side note I don't trust just about any of the food they sell at the grocery store.
The ice cream and potatoes ones are idiotic. They list those because they're often mixed with egg when made at home.
Im sure of it..Just make sure you wash them well before eating..even eggs..wash the shells. Something I never used to worry so much about until I had all these kids.. Im learning to take precautions. Wash foods in a clean sink of water and a cup of vinegar...then spray with peroxide. wipe clean. Should kill all kinds of germs.
Which is why it's important to purchase organically. Organic companies care more about the consumer, and not the all mighty dollar.
