New research from the University of California, San Francisco suggests that drinking diet soda may reduce your risk of forming kidney stones.
Increased alkalinity is a known factor in the development of kidney stones. The study found that the amount of citrate and malate contained in popular diet sodas may inhibit the development of calcium stones. Researchers measured the citrate and malate content of 15 popular diet sodas and found that Diet Sunkist Orange contained the greatest amount of total alkali and Diet 7-Up had the greatest amount of citrate as alkali. In a news release from the American Urologial Association, Dr. Anthony Y. Smith said,"This study by no means suggests that patients with recurrent kidney stones should trade in their water bottles for soda cans. However, this study suggests instead that patients with stone disease who do not drink soda may benefit from moderate consumption."

Couldn't convince me of this, I have had numerous kidney stones and I drink diet dr pepper all the time.
why would we promote drinking any kind of pop/soda...regularly. it is a shame
mmmm... i chose other because i love diet orange crush and diet a&w rootbeer. but pp, some of us drink soda in moderation. i think of it as a treat!!
Yes, and at WHAT COST from the other ingredients in diet sodas?
i picked diet dr pepper but i also love coke zero and diet cream soda.
We stopped drinking soda entirely and feel a lot better for it. When I get a mean soda craving I buy Reed's Cherry China Cola. 130 calories per bottle but it's made of flowers and herbs and mmmmm it kicks a craving.
I think all these studies are hogwash. The whole artificial sweetener causes cancer bit. Well duh give a lab rat 1,000,000 times his body weight in anything and he'll die. Even good old water. So now diet soda helps prevent kidney stones, in people, in lab rats what. Is there in proof in the real world?
I suspect in a few years their gonna find something wrong with water. As for me I will continue to enjoy a variety of drinks, including diet soda, water, juice and coffee. I may not live as long but I suspect I will enjoy life much more.
Prevent kidney stones while sucking the calcium from your bones... hmm..
I think they need to look at the other ingredients in soda. I definately won't start drinking any soda anytime soon.
